Should I move or not?

Options
I'm trying (miserably) to move out and need a second opinion on this.

My current situation (monthly)
2 bed masionette
Rent - £308
Car insurance £160
C Tax £88
Commute 1300 miles
Petrol £240 (roughly)

Possible move:
Semi 2 bed bungalow
Rent £550
Car Insurance £55
C Tax £120
Commute 352 miles
Petrol £50 - £100 (guesstimate)
I'm presuming home insurance will be the same (more or less)

Where I'm moving to is in the middle of farmers fields, so my new neighbours will be actual cows (which will probably be better behaved than the 2 legged animals I live around now). But something's telling me it won't work out. Dunno what or why.

Reading your title, Im guessing your looking for advice on whether you should move or not, only you can asnwer this.

From info you have provided, there is no real difference in cost.

    Why are you moving?

Ok so petrol has to be £71 to make the costs even. If petrol's £100, is the reduced commuting time/improved living conditions worth £30 a month to you? Can you afford that £30 a month?

Are you sure the car insurance will drop that much? Seems a massive difference!
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard

It is a huge drop. It's my postcode rating - have done quotes for the new address - all details the same except the address). I suppose the £30 is well worth it - get away from the skanks that are my neighbours (had to call the police yet again last night). I think it's just hesitation at such a big change. I just hope there's no foot and mouth outbreak!

  • Forgot to update this one...

Contacted the agent and the house went to someone else some time ago - the agent apparently "forgot" to take it off the website (it was their own !!!!!!, not a comparison one).

As for the insurance, I've had a few quotes for different addresses that I'm looking at and they're all a lot lower ("not one of them was less than £1000 a year less) than what I'm paying now - goes to show what a c**p area I live in!

    I would move....!
  • Why are you commuting 1300 miles or even 352 miles? Is it for work?
Everything I know, I've learned from Judge Judy. :p

Those are monthly figures, so 1300 miles = 30 miles each way.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • Yeah - about 32 miles to work and the same back. I love my job (you'd have to do that!) though the pay isn't great for what I do (public sector, you see - would get more in the private sector but I can't bring myself down to their level!).

Anyways, I've done a lot of calculations and have got out my cold feet stage. The financial difference between my current circumstances and a proposed new one won't be huge - about £60 - £100 a month better off. The savings on petrol (because I'll be a damn site closer to work) and insurance (because I won't be in the hellhole I live in now) will pay the extra on rent.

Thankfully, my back pay has now come through so that will pay a deposit and go towards the first month's rent. I'm going to do a couple of car boot sales for a little extra dosh and get rid of stuff I don't need.

Shame I won't find a property like the one I posted about. Middle of nowhere, sheep and cows for neighbours, private road, detached property, own garden, ultra low insurance.... ahh bliss!

You're also saving 10k miles a year travelling, so there's the quality of life aspect, as well as saving wear and tear on the car.

dont forget to include costs of changing your car insurance details to a new property (~£80) the cost of moving belongings to a new place (£variable) and the little things like possible cancelation costs for services at your current place if you dont want or need them at the new place.

also sounds like your moving more rural, petrol costs per litre is generally 5-10p more expensive so you may want to factor that into your petrol costs if you havent done so already.
