Potato problem

hello,
I dug up some of my potates yesterday and some appear to have been attacked by some form of pest/disease. The symptoms are almost circular groups of indentations into the skin (around 8 a group). It looks like some form of worm has made these. Each circle is around 1/2 cm wide.
Any ideas what this could be anyone? Any help would be gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Julie

  • small holes are usually caused by either eel worm or wire worm but larger holes (as you describe) could be slugs and/or woodlice as they can cause plenty of damage to a crop of spuds - and the holes are usually bigger than that of worm damage

sort through all of the ones with holes in them - and keep them separate - so you can use them first (you can still use them - just cut away the damaged bits)

if you have loads that are damaged and are worried that they won't keep for any length of time - just cook the whole lot up and freeze them - either as just boiled (in which case slightly under cook them) or cook them and mash them - freeze as mash, croquettes, potato cakes etc

i had a fair few damaged ones this year - but i am slowly getting through them
saving money by growing my own - much of which gets drunk
    made loads last year

Are they just on the surface? Could it be scab (google it for pics)? It doesn't look nice but is harmless & the potatoes are still edible.

    Many thanks for your replies.

I do not think it is scab as the holes are not raised. The inside of the potato still appears good.

I will keep an eye on the crop and sort them as advised.

I am pleased they will still be edible, thank you for helping.
    kind regards Julie
