How do I open a DAT file??

in Techie Stuff
i have been sent a couple of DAT files and the error message I keep getting is Your current scurity settings do not allow this file to be downloaded. Can anybody noddy guide me through this please. If it helps I'm using w7 Home Premium Malware Bytes and Avast. Thanks in advance

He opend it with Windows Media player, But whether it's relevant or not to the issue I'm at work and just tried to play some albums I have on my laptop, clicked a number of diffrent tracks and a red cross appeared and an error message WMP encountered a problem while playing the fileIf youcan lie down at night knowing in your heart that you just made someone’s day just a little bit better,you know you had a good day!!0 -

Seems to be with IE, this is for IE 7 but the settings should be the same
