bathroom recommendations?

hi we're just having an en suite built and need to order the bathroom.

my oh doesn't want to get it from b+q because we bought one from there before and it was pretty rubbish quality.

is wickes any better? or is it basically the same?

we want a bath, and i would like a sink / toilet thing like this;

any other suggestions where else to look?

we can't really afford a new bathroom atm :o but our builder has included all the fitting of one within the price of the extension so its seems a bit silly not to get one, then pay for fitting later. so price is quite an issue, but also we think its better to pay a bit more now and hopefully not have to replace it in a couple of years?

  • Another vote for the plumbers' merchants - we used City Plumbing and they were great. Remember to ask for a discount - we got about 25% off everything just for asking. Plus they were flexible about delivery, gave us great advice, and it was handy having them local to pick up extra bits along the way.

The logic escapes me. You can't afford a new bathroom but the builder has included fitting one in the price for the extension? If you can't afford it why aren't you getting the builder to knock the fitting price off the price of the extension and leaving the whole en suite thing until you can afford it? Equally if you can't afford it why have you got an ensuite designed into the extension in the first instance?

You don't have to answer if you don't want - just sowing seeds. :D

Oh and both posters above me are spot on wrt sourcing the sanitaryware and bits.

    Cheers

Thanks i've just had a look a jewsons, would the prices in the bathroom catalog be trade or retail?

we've got a city plumbing / plumb centre fairly nearby with a showroom, could i go and have a look and then ask my builder to go and buy it for us or do you need to be a builder to go in?

    yes i hear you!:D
we really needed more space, started saving a deposit to move but when looking in general at house prices we realised that to get to get what we 'really want' would take us years to save enough deposit.
Our garage already had the foundations to build above, and when we asked a couple of estate agents they both agreed that the price of another bedroom with ensuite would be worth quite a fair bit more than the cost to build it, and it will give us the extra room we do need while we are here.
As for knocking the bathroom fitting price off the total price, we've got a price to do the whole build up to plastered walls. I imagine the plumbing bit wouldn't be very much to him, and would cost us more if we called one in ourselves in a few months.
You are right though and I did suggest to my oh just leaving it an empty shell for now but he'd rather just get it done and finished.

thanks for all the replies :)
  • I have used plumbworld a few times now and always been very happy with their service

And they usually have some very good bargains in their sale stuff.

Personally I think you'd be better off leaving it an empty shell for a bit rather than doing a half assed and cheapskate job on the en-suite. Not being rude but if the budget don't stretch thats what you could end up with.

How much has the builder allowed for a) plumbing works and fitting, b) tiling and finishing?

    Cheers

Hi i don't know how much he is charging for the plumbing / fitting. we've got a total price for the extension up to plastered walls (we've got to paint) we're not tiling but having a block of mermaid panel around the bath and above the basin.

ok i went to pts and tbh they weren't interested in even talking to me, i just took some brochures in the end.
we went (dh and i) to cityplumbing today and they were helpful. (so extra marks to them so far:))

we liked some furniture by atlanta, the salesman said it was very good quality, never had any comebacks, all positive. when we talked about baths he suggested one made by eastbrook. he said everything else they make is rubbish but their baths were really good quality. i mentioned ideal standard and he said they were for a long time very very good quality, but then the company was taken over and the standards went down, now all your paying for is the name.

so can anyone give me their opinions on what we've been told? any experiance of atlanta bathroom furniture? or eastbrook baths?
we've priced up what we'd need and it came out to just under £3000.
thats using the prices out of the book, are we likely to be able to get a discount from that price ourselves? or any idea how much discount our builder may be able to get? (bearing in mind who knows if he'd pass it all on to us if we asked him to by it on our behalf)

thanks very much for all your replies so far.

I got a suite from plumbworld, very good quality, all porcelain except the bath, they had an offer to upgrade the bath to a whirlpool so I opted for that.

Check the delivery terms as mine were that the suite must be inspected, there was 30 minutes approx allowed for that, and then the goods must be signed for or rejected, if signed for, there was no option of reporting any fault(s) found later.

weve just had an extension built with an ensuite & bathroom in it, went to a plumbers merchants (willie wilsons), they had a showroom so we could see stuff. Told them what we were wanting and they got in touch with my plumber with the price. He passed on half his discount to me (the prices in the showroom were silly). Decent quality stuff, £1400 incl vat for the ensuite which has a grohe mixer shower in a offset quadrant cubicle, and £1000 for the bathroom which has a mira shower over the bath.
