Wrist watch

Afternoon,

i'm hoping you can help. i bought a watch a little over 3 years ago. finally the battery has given up, so i took it to my local timpsons for a new battery fitted. they fought with the watch but could not get the back off, saying it had been fitted wrong. i rang the company i bought it from, 2 weeks ago and returned the watch and explaining this. I got a reply back today, with the faulty watch saying.....

as it advises in our terms and conditions, all customers have 14 days in which to return all items, if the item has a fault then it may be returned after the 14 working days

After investigating the returned item, our QC department have advised that this item has exceeded its manufacturer warranty and has been deemed as general wear and tear.

As a result of this we are unable to accept the returned item as it has been over 3 years since the order was made.

where do i stand on this?? surely a watch should last longer than 3 years??

thanks in advance

James

Why don't you take the watch to a proper jewellers, rather than a place who mainly cut keys and repair shoes? It's possible that they either didn't have the right equipment, or the right staff, for the job.

Did you ask the manufacturer to remove the back and replace the battery? I assume they received your watch, saw it was 3 years old, and just returned it with a standard "outside our warranty period" letter.
  • yes thats what was suggested when i originally sent it back, but got the standard nothing we can do for you letter!! timpsons are the closest, and i've used them loads of times before, its one of the older stores that have had the same 'old' guy in since i was born!!

Should a watch last more than 3 years? Probably, but it will depend on the make and price. £20 'Fashion' watches would be assumed less durable than TAG/Rolex, etc.
  • As someone who works in a Jewellers I would say from experience that the back of the watch was on properly and the people you took the watch to simply couldn't get the back off. We get hundreds of watches in every week for batteries and every so often we come across one that we just cannot open with the tools we have and have to send it to the manufacturer.

My TAG lasted 7 years on its original battery ! very impressed.........
  • On average, batteries last for 12 - 18 months. Battery life depends on the quality of the battery and the watch movement. (Some use more power than others, stopwatches continually running on a chronograph will us power considerably quicker) Having said that, I've known cheaper brands of watches to last longer between battery changes than more expensive ones. :)
