Can anyone give us an idea of labour cost for changing the engine in a car?

Scotsman Can I ask where in the UK you found the £100 mechanic? Send it pm if you don't want to be public.

Just a guy that does it out his shed for beer money, he does a roaring trade though.
If your near Lanark, give me a shout.

We are in Cumbria. Hence the distance to find a hoist.

Thanks everyone. Still passing all the info to DS.
ATM his greatest problem is the fact that the engine he bought although an astra gsi engine had been in a Nova previously.

I have suggested he does as much as he possibly can and then maybe see if his mate who originally offered can spare a couple of hours to do final tinkering to get it running properly.

I wish I could get it to Lanark. A bit too far.

You'd have to trailer it I would think - it'll have no (remotely effective) brakes at present
brakes are independent of the engine, just have to remove the vacuum pipe from the servo

does the engine codes match? he will be disappointed if it's an nova gsi engine and I would strip and rebuild the engine as the gsi is going on 12 years and probably had a hard life being driven by a boy racer

DS arrived home with the engine hoist at 6pm yesterday and he and DS2 worked until 1am. The block isn't out yet but it is almost there.

I hope he has checked engine codes. It is an engine which has been stripped and re built.

He is planning on getting it in and running and then stripping down the engine he has removed and working on it to either reuse or sell.

It is a steep learning curve ATM but once he has done it I know he will be thankful of the money you have all helped him to save. And the confidence he has gained will be massive.

• Labor cost varies from place to place and also varies according to the make and model of your vehicle.
Like if you go to the local mechanic than they will charge accordingly and in the same way if you go to the company they will charge on that manner. But there are places like Autopartsfair.
They will give you company satisfaction in low cost and also provide you tips for how to maintain your vehicle.

I have a farm car (doesnt get used on the main road just our land) that required a new engine a pajero big hefty lump and we were charged about £250 to fit it (we supplied the engine from a breakers yard)
