2 Questions one about Anti-virus and the other about Java

1.

Of the free Anti-virus software available, does one preform much better over the other, Anti-vir or AVG?

2.
"J2SE Runtime environment" which i believe is a Java application.
I'm not to sure, has updated itself on my machine in updates 8-10 each one is around 120mb in size according to the add/remove section on windows. Are they unnecessary for anything, what will happen if I remove them?

Help and advice appreciated.

    1. a) depends on what you mean by "performs better". Less resource usage? Traps more viruses?
    b) quite often comparing Antivirus A with Antivirus B is a matter of experience (probably mostly with just one of them), prejudice, or guess-work.

    2. Unless you have a specific reason for keeping an older version of the JRE (like some software you have got requires a specific version to run), you can Remove all versions but the latest (which incidentally is v6 -- their numbering scheme is a bit ropey). Click on the fourth download button to start the process...

PS The Size figure in Add or Remove Programs varies from approximately accurate to wildly fanciful!
