Sorry old chap, the money has run out!

Options
So here we are...

This moment has been coming for a while, but it looks like this month is where I finally hit the wall and there's not enough money left to pay the monthly bills.

A bit of background...

I left university with a large overdraft and a credit card debt which I had needed just to keep myself afloat (back in those days, fees were paid upfront which took a £1000 whack out of your budget). My parents helped out with living costs where I could through uni, and I had a job for most of my time there except towards the end of my final year where I needed to knuckle down and study.

I graduated and got a fairly low paid, but promising job, which wasn't enough to pay off my debts quickly, but was just about enough to sustain me living on my own.

Since then, I have met my partner, got a house, and had our first child, and while my income continued to grow, so did my debts. It was weird... it seemed like a (reasonably) comfortable life was always just out of financial reach, and borrowing continued to grow to pay off our bills. We've never had a particularly lavish lifestyle, but at the same time we clearly lived a little beyond our means.

When our little girl came along, my partner went onto maternity leave, and returned to work, now part-time, 6 months later. This reduction in income wasn't felt at first as it was swallowed up by borrowing, but now it is beginning to bite.

About 6 months ago I took out a loan - partly to repay the amassed credit card bills, but also to get some tyres for the car which badly needed replacing (and I also needed to spend quite a bit on repairs for damage caused by the tyre fitters/wheel aligners...). It became clear a couple of months after taking out the loan that I had almost used up the credit on the card that had been paid off by the loan. I decided things needed to change. I stopped using the credit cards, and started using what little was left to start paying them off. Things were going well.

Then last month we were hit by a few things happening all at once. First, one of our dogs got ill, and it happened on Saturday night. She needed to go to the vet's straight away, but didn't have insurance due to her age (rescue dog). The vet told me how much the costs were and my mind was soon numb to the numbers... £100 visit charge, £150 x-ray, etc. etc. After the initial diagnosis the vet said it was quite serious and she needed to start on an aggressive course of antibiotics, and our dog would need to be kept in for observation... they weren't sure of the cost but depending on how much treatment was needed, it could be another £1000... I agreed.

I went home and got a call a few hours later... our dog's condition had worsened. The only option left now was surgery, which would cost a further £5000, and wasn't guaranteed success. I spoke to my partner, but the decision was already made for us - we couldn't afford any more... we told the vet we would be down shortly to say our goodbyes.

Euthenisation added further costs. As much as we loved our dog, I decided that we would have to go for a mass cremation, but my partner was pretty down about the whole thing, so in the end we opted for an individual cremation, which added a futher £190 to the costs.

My parents kindly lent us £1000 to cover the costs, but when I added it all up it came to around £1400, a lot of which had been covered by the remaining credit on the credit cards.

The second problem was that our little girl is one today. I kept it pretty frugal on the presents front, and we organsied a party for family and friends as we never had a christening. We kept the costs down by going to the local pub for a meal (where everyone paid for themselves), but there were still costs in providing alcohol and snacks at home. Another problem is that now she is 1, she has outgrown her baby car seat. I bought a seat from Morrisons for £50 for my partner's car, but mine was more of a problem as only certain car seats will fit due to its age. So another £100 went on a seat for my car.

To make matters worse, the payment on one of my credit cards is around pay day. This has meant that last month, the payment date fell after I was paid (i.e. in this month's budget) and this month it falls before I get paid (i.e. also in this month's budget). I didn't have the money to cover it last month anyway, but it had the effect that the problem was put off another month. All of this has left me staring at my budget this month with the relaisation that I have a gaping £400 hole in my finances. I have an 'emergency buffer' on my overdraft of £250, so even with that, it won't cover it. I have £1500 left to pay this month, and only £1100 left to cover it

Now that is a big old post!
I'm sure people will come in and comment soon but.....3 cars. Really? If you can can that down you will reduce spending straight away and get a bit of cash from the sale. Also do you need garage hire? At £55 a month it seems quite alot if you can go without.

    Good luck

A couple of points on the SOA:
We have three cars - one car each, and also a project car. I recognise that the project car probably needs to go - it is worth about £300 in a good market, but I won't get much if I sell in a rush. It's SORN'd and not insured, so adding no cost other than the garage rent.
Garage rent is for the project car, but I also use the lockup to store my tools, and also to perform repairs on my car, and my partner's car. 55 quid a month equates to 660 quid a year - this is less than what I have saved in garage service and labour bills, but now that the cars are running well, this may no longer be the case.
400 for groceries can probably be cut down a little, but includes rising costs for the little one and some clothes for her occasionally. It is hard to resist some temptation when you're not spending much on going out!
Entertainment includes a couple of meals out (or takeaways) a month, and football subs. We really don't spend much here. We don't smoke, and don't drink a lot, even at home.
Nursery will soon switch to childcare vouchers. It is for 1/2 day a week, when grandparents can't cover.
Sky includes broadband, and will also include phone line rental soon. It compensates for the fact we don't go out much. Even if we reduce the package to get rid of the movies which we use the least, we will only save £5 per month.

    Also on my debts...
I haven't defaulted (yet). I have a couple of missed payments and overlimit charges splattered over my credit rating over the last couple of months, but my accounts are all up to date. My council tax is currently one month in arrears. Mortgage has always been paid on time.

Yep, sorry, I was already writing my 'excuses' before I saw your post!

Garage hire and project car are two things that may have to go.

I need my car to commute - I have looked into public transport and it's a 2 hour journey each way (tram, train, bus), compared to 20 minutes in the car! My partner, well, she won't give up her car and uses it to commute. She would probably save a little on public transport, but not much, and enjoys the convenience, especially transporting the little one.

Right I'm sure someone will be here shortly with more ideas BUT here's mine for now.

Contact Sky and say you are going to leave, they may well allow you to reduce your subsciption with out penalty.

do same with mobile phones, as soon as contacts near end FINISH THEM don't renew and go for pay as you go. If you have a tight month you just talk less and text more;)

Do you really need garage hire?? that's a big saving you could make.

Entertainment well this month it's dvd's and home cooked pop corn, that's something that can be cut down.

Food shopping for 2 adults and a one year old could be lower, try a slow cooker for cheaper cuts of meat if you have one. Fill up on vegs so need less meat on your plate. We have 2 adults one 18yr old and a very fussy 9 yr old and we only spend 55.00 a week.

Cotton nappies will save you loads if you can do that. We saved loads and they are shaped and fit like dispos ones. I still have some terry squares make great floor cloths.

You must pay your council tax, utilities above your credit cards. Trust me when I say the last thing you want is council tax bailiffs at your door, which if you are in arrears in an inevitability rather than a possibility.

I'd start selling on ebay...that'll get you some funds.

Any gold you can sell, you can check out Martins front page see if you can send off any gold for cash.

I'm sure you could cut your shopping bill, try over the Oldstyle boards for ideas.

My only other thought is that you should maybe get pet insurance, again check out this site for the best deals. I'm also really sorry about your dog, sounds like went through a traumatic time.

Did you add the Child Benefit to your total amount...if so I missed it.

Also can you balance transfer your larger APR's CC to a 0% or lower APR one. Takes a while to set up but will be helpful in the future.
