I suppose Sarah's idea might have appealed to me in the days when my children were small and I was home all day but now, apart from the time aspect, I can't imagine my teenage sons would find a homemade alternative thoughtful and special! Like Judi, I will put mine in the weekly shop, already having received instructions on which ones to buy.

I think it's lovely to have home made alternatives to commercial and I like the idea of something that is traditional in a family but I'm not sure how many children 11+ would agree. Mine go along with my attempts to avoid branded food, fast food etc but feel that for Christmas and Easter I should take a day off!

My mum used to 'scrunch' up a couple of Shredded Wheat and mix with a melted Mars Bar to make 'nests'. She would then fill with mini-eggs.

I think Easter Eggs are another thing that have gone over the top, like Christmas, Mothers Day, Valentines day etc. We always have an easter egg hunt which will involve mini wrapped eggs and they also get one egg each.

  • My kids do an easter egg hunt each year, I buy a big choccie rabbit and little eggs for 99p from Lidl for each of them and hide them all. Great fun!!
I do confess to buying eggs for my friend's girls and my nephew but at 83p each at Asda I'm not complaining. I loved having eggs when I was little, even though I knew a bar of chocalte would be better value. Happy memories.

    OH my word!
I am having one of those days today. I keep offending people unintentionally!

    Please do not take offence.

My dad worked approx 7am to 7pm 6 days a week.

And anyhow it takes less time for me to grab some paper out of the shredder to make a nest than it does to go down to woolies and fight my way through the crowds.

    apology accepted sarahsaver :)
but your 1st post did read as if you were saying a mass produced tacky easter egg was never thoughtful or special,

even in the post quoted you mention your father worked 7am to 7pm 6 days a week as if to say he could do that and still make easter trees, well some people don't do the home made option every time for various reasons but are still special despite that,

your ideas are often lovely and I admire you for them but it doesn't necessarily make you a better mum than those who don't have your talents,

please don't take offence, none is intended :)

In recent years my son has spent Easter with his father and grandparents because they celebrate Easter and my family don't. Nowadays I barely even notice it's Easter apart from the extended bank holiday. Even when I "did" easter I preferred to give him a present, gawd knows he had enough chocolate already.

I'd probably feel differently if I was a chocolate addict ;o)

My main memory of easter eggs is my mum eating them on the sly then buying me comics to make up for it. My house had the Easter Bunny in reverse - Mum used to sneak into our rooms in the middle of the night and take the eggs away!

jenny jo never let it be said that im better than anyone else, nor were my parents more special than anyone elses. In fact more often on here (and in the 'real' world) believe it or not I have been berated for my moneysaving efforts, my poor kids are deprived!- LOL
I may do my usual of going to woolies after easter when the sale is on, or even better poundland when the eggs are reduced to 50p!
    Anyways, I digress...
I saw an idea in a magazine where empty eggshells were made into tealight holders, ok for older kids.

We have an 6 hole egg box each(which my son decorated when he was much younger) and I buy the packs of small individual eggs(Creme eggs, aero eggs etc) when they are on offer.

We all get 5 small eggs each plus one decorated wooden egg each that my friend sent us from Russia.

The boxes when empty(& boy do they get emptied quick!) get put away again for next easter along with the wooden egg.

It's a nice tradition that I started by accident but DS gets very disappointed if the egg boxes don't appear(and he's 14 now!)

This way we all get some chocolate without going too OTT(esp all that packaging they use!)

Easter for us has more significance as we are churchgoers so chocolate, bunnies etc don't feature as highly.

Lidl has some excellent value Easter goodies. My personal favourite for value is the Easter Bunny (about 15cm) which comes in a pack with around 2 -3 smaller bunnies and around 10 milk chooclate hollow eggs. On offer just now at 99p. My personal favourite for my own munching are the small marzipan eggs . Around 10 for 79p. Also like the small wrapped chooclate bars with a white chocolate bunny in the middle. These come in a bag of around 15 I think and are 99p. If you have one near enough Sarah you might manage something with a specifically easter theme for the same price as the market choccies.

Well my kids are older now nearly 16 & 13 and like the money they go and get some 1/2 price ones after Easter. They normally have 1 from grandparents and 1 from an aunt & uncle so don't miss out on Easter Day and they both say it makes more sense.

I am 'training' them well - I buy up the 1/2 price selection boxes after christmas :)
