My Samsung N140 (with 2Gb upgrade) is fine, good battery life, non-reflective screen and runs well with 7 starter, (remove samsung bloatware) and very acceptable with ubuntu , typing this on it now down the pub.

..and I am in Corfu using my Samsung N130 (upgraded to 2gb) on a sunlounger using a 3G mobile dongle with a Greek data sim in it. Just watched a full screen full movie (copied from DVD) on it fine and now surfing, battery last a lot longer than a cheap laptop would and recharges amazingly quick. Runs Windows XP with Samsung dross removed fine. Comodo firewall and Avira antivirus took a bit of edge off it but great protection is worth it.

    :)

As aforementioned, many seem to prefer upgrading the RAM in their machines for better performance.
I would not go a far as writing that they had 'good' processors.

Unless portability is of the essence, I would not recommend paying £200 plus for a Netbook.

Especially when you can buy a new laptop for around £250 and a decent as new 'refurb' for around £200.

No need to spend £350 to £400 on a laptop for the stated usage.

Another vote for the Samsung netbooks :) I spent ages trying many out in the shops when I was looking for one, and the Sammy just seemed more solid and better built. Performance is fine for what I need it for (I have a N150 Plus with the Atom n550 processor, upgraded the RAM to 2GB which takes about 30 seconds though worth noting that this model takes DDR3) and I'm just very happy with it -the bloatware was the first thing to go though :p

browse media (Adobe Flash for instance) heavy websites it might not be up for a job

I have absolutely no problems using media-heavy websites on my netbook, and regularly stream live tv (and on a few occasions, several feeds at the same time!).

Most netbooks come with an Intel Atom processor. To me they are good. They run windows at a fast speed. Ok its not going to let you run powerful games or do video editing and such and yes upgrading the Ram will speed things up too.

A new laptop for £250? Wow where have you seen those? My girlfriend is looking for a new netbook but if you know a good laptop for like £250 then I may advise her to get that!

Nor do I but then I'm not 9 years old like my son who likes to play Bin Weevils and other flash-based games. It's also the reason I said might not be up to the job rather than it absolutely no-way will do it.

Netbooks, in particular those with Atom processors, were not designed for heavy media, whether they can handle it or not. It would be inappropriate and irresponsible for me to give advice suggesting otherwise.

Makes sense :) I don't play games on the netbook so can't comment on that at all.

Some 'as new' shop returns turn up, like this Toshiba Satellite C660-1D7. I bought one. Paid £259. Looked untouched.

Nice! I don't normally tech stuff 'as new' but that looks pretty good. Thanks!
