Sharing drains

Thank you for taking the time to respond. We are going to ask for a capacity test to be carried out, but I will get onto the water company and seek their advice.0

Shared drains are great until you find out your neighbour runs a hairdressing business from home and also likes fry ups. It's a sure recipe for regular blockages...For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0

My neighbor and I were building at the same time so we decided to share a drain as it halved the costs for both of us since we had to dig up the main road and get a wayleave and all sorts of rubbish. There is a manhole at my gate which we both connect too and from there it goes across to the mains which is a bit away. We have a verbal agreement that any problems/blockages after the manhole and up to the mains will be shared unless its something really obvious like his kids have flushed a toy down the bog or something, but if he ever sold up then I suspect I would probably get something down in writing that could be passed on to the new owner.0

Thank you, would you mind me asking how much it cost you? The builder says it's only going to cost £1500 to do it without us. I can't see how doing it via us will save him much, when he is going to pay our legals + compensation and obviously the cost of doing the work.
It's just not making much sense to me.0 -
Neither of which won't be needed after October this year as it will be clear cut - provided of course you get to agree as to exactly where the blockage lies.We have a verbal agreement that any problems/blockages after the manhole and up to the mains will be shared unless its something really obvious like his kids have flushed a toy down the bog or something, but if he ever sold up then I suspect I would probably get something down in writing that could be passed on to the new owner.
See post above.

Let him get on with it then and save yourselves the hassle.emmatthews wrote: »The builder says it's only going to cost £1500 to do it without us.

Having been through a nightmare for the last 7 years where I was sharing drains with my chip fat loving neighbours, I would advise you to run a mile.
Rodding drains in the freezing cold because your neighbours are too lazy/selfish/stupid etc etc to not chuck fat down the sink is no fun at all.
Why put yourself in any sort of risk? While the money may seem appealing now, you'll know what I mean if you end up having to get the rubber gloves and bleach out some time in the future0 -
Thanks to all of you that have taken the time to reply. We're going to say no. There doesn't seem to be anything to gain for us. I have a feeling the builder may not be telling us the full story about the costs involved and I have no intention of being taken for a fool!
If the only benefit is a few hundred pounds, then it just doesn't seem worth it for the potential problems and granting a right of way (easement) on our property.
Many thanks0
