My main point was that it is a pity that you have to get narky to get decent service from companies?
That is not my experience. I do not believe that anyone has to "get narky" to get a decent service from companies.

I haven't read the whole thread (only up to the point I have quoted).

Facts: you are 2 1/2yrs down the line from initial purchase. Purchases *over* 2yrs will incur an additional fee. Is that unreasonable? I don't think so. When you purchase a ring, you either a) get your ring finger sized and buy the appropriate size, or b) purchase a ring you like and then have it altered to fit. What you cannot expect is, to have the original ring altered 2 1/2yrs down the line for free! You could have put on weight/lost a lot of weight - split up and pulling a fast one - whatever! There a numerable scenarios.

But, as you state, your main point is: it is a pity that you have to get narky to get decent service from companies and I disagree!

I have had very "decent" service from companies simply by asking how they might rectify a (genuine on their behalf) mistake. In your instance, you knew the ring didn't fit ... were happy to leave it 2 1/2yrs before dealing with the issue (even though it wasn't a big deal for you in the preceeding 2 1/2yrs ;) ) and you're now getting upperty that you may well be charged (unless you "get narky"!).

The time to be "narky" was when you first bought it and asked for a re-fit (and if that were refused!). To get "narky" so long down the line ... well, that says far more about you than it does the company you are complaining about ;)

The main point is: if you want a decent service, and that is not forthcoming; the time to complain is at the outset ... not 2 1/2 yrs down the line when it suits you better ;) This is someone's business! They have to make a living and gave you plenty of time to make the required "adjustments" from the time of purchase. Get as narky as you like ... but do shoulder the responsibility of your own "choices/actions". To my mind, the company have honoured any "responsibility" they may have had toward your original purchase.

She would have known it didn't fit at the time.
  • huh?

I actually called up about a year ago as the ring was quite loose and they told me that the first re-size would be free, but any more than one would incur a charge. At that point I told the person on the phone, that in that case, I would leave it until nearer the wedding to get it re-sized, to save the chance of having to have it done twice. If there was an official 2 year policy in place, then surely the person on the phone would have told me not to wait

she was not told that it had a time limit.

danielley : i would have done exactly the same hun, if you was not informed of a time limit why would u get it done earlier and risk having to pay again!

unfortunatly i got my ring made bigger in october and have lost alot of weight and will have to get it madde smaller again but will wait until closer to my wedding otherwise it will need doing again!!!

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I got a ring resized in my local jewellers for £10 and it took the guy half an hour.

I once went to Beaverbrooks to get a stone replaced out of a white gold ring I had - just a cz stone, and they wanted £45 ish for it. Considering the ring cost £60 I was horrified. Went to a local jewellers and they charged £8.

I never go to the big jewellers anymore!

You did buy it 2 and a half years ago, so when do you think should be the cut off point?

    3 years? 5 years?

I think they were very accomodating to do it for free.

The place we bought my engagement ring from will clean it yearly and resize whenever needed (no limits) for life.
I think the OP makes a good point, she should have been told the exact limits of the 'free' resizing offer. Otherwise it's been offered under false pretences. Small print doesn't mean you can just not tell the customer the limitations.
:grin:If at first you don't succeed, then sky-diving isn't for you
