Just lost my rag in the jewellers

I bought my engagement ring from a local jewellers 2 and a half years ago.
I was in the store last weekend pricing up wedding bands, and at that point we discussed resizing, which they said would take about a week.
I went into the jewellers today to drop off my engagement ring to be resized and when they looked up my details they said that because the purchase was over 2 years ago, they would have to charge me £75!
I am normally quite mild mannered, but I must admit I got a bit bolshy and said that I thought it was a joke.
Another assistant came over and asked what the issue was and I explained. She said that there was a limited time frame in which to take advantage of the re-size offer.
I told them that I thought it was ludicrous and I informed them that I actually called up about a year ago as the ring was quite loose and they told me that the first re-size would be free, but any more than one would incur a charge. At that point I told the person on the phone, that in that case, I would leave it until nearer the wedding to get it re-sized, to save the chance of having to have it done twice. If there was an official 2 year policy in place, then surely the person on the phone would have told me not to wait...
Anyway, after a lot of 'we shouldn't be doing this' the second assistant said they would do it as a 'one -off'.
I'm really annoyed, why is it that you have to get assertive in order to get decent service?
There is no chance I am getting my rings from there now.
Just thought I would post in case anyone elses jewellers have a 2 year re-size policy. :rotfl:

My ring came from Samara James, and they are very up front about it. I can get it resized free within a year, which I thought was very good. I wouldn't really expect anything more. Saying that, if I called them asking about it and then said I would wait till nearer the wedding I would expect them to say there was a time limit!:T0

No it was Chisholm Hunter.
I just think it was a bit cheeky as when we were in looking at wedding rings there wasn't a problem, and we did mention then that we bought the ring from them over 2 years ago. Obviously they were going to waiver the fee as they thought it would mean a further sale.
I have used them quite a lot in the past, but that is it now.
I'm just a bit concerned that they will 'lose' my ring0 -
Have you ever thought that maybe you were in the wrong? Rules are rules - if they apply to everyone else, then they should apply to you too.Getting married to a wonderful lady on August 10, 2012.
Need to save up, lose weight, reduce my money worries and get back to being the real me! :j0 -

You did buy it 2 and a half years ago, so when do you think should be the cut off point?
3 years? 5 years?
I think they were very accomodating to do it for free.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

I have spoken to them twice about getting resized, firstly about a year ago to enquire how much it would be to my surprise (as I was expecting to have to pay) I was told that the first adjustment would be free and I discussed with someone at that point that I would leave it until I got married.
Then secondly last week, when they again said it would be free (I spoke to the same person last week as I did today)
I think that they are making up rules as and when it suits them to try and squeeze an extra few pounds out of customers.
My main point was that it is a pity that you have to get narky to get decent service from companies?0 -
both times when you discussed resizing, did you mention how long ago you bought the engagement ring?
I'd never expect a firm to do the resizing so long after the ring was bought0 -
I cant remember doing so the first time, I might have just said 'I bought a ring from you a while back'
Last weekend we definitely mentioned that it was over 2.5 years ago.0 -
