"Tech Care" called me today

Oh dear, I don't know where to start with this one: I am posting this partially to pre-warn people but also just incase I am wrong and this company are anything to be concerned about.

The called me, guy says his name does not say the name of his company. States that my computer in the past few days has been sending out error messages and is "causing congestion on the network". I was then told he was a microsoft qualified something or other and was going to put me through to someone else to deal with the issue.

I then tried to get the name of the company whom I was speaking to, the first guy having spelt out to me "bect care" the second when I had asked for the company name told me the company was 'techincal support tech care', googling did not help so I asked for the web address, then to spell it out to me (Indian accent so bad I couldn't understand it) and was told "its www...." several times before again saying an incoherant word and then saying "L" and finally hanging up.

I then 1-4-7-1-ed the number to find the call was made by 08888888888  and this was enough for me to no longer feel worried about any such viruses they were mentioning I had. (Trojans, viruses and many other system failures).

I have not experienced any more errors then I normally have done in the past few years with my old ld computer. I have virus protection, regularly do scans and have no reason to believe I have anything wrong with my computer, I wanted to post this in case anyone else experiences a similar call and maybe isn't so secure in knowing when someone is trying to scam you.

I'd advise to get the name of the company, google the address, get all contact details and ask to call back at a later date when you have researched. If they are trying to push for you do stay on the line or pay money or download anything then hang up if they have not done so already.

Scam phone calls like this generate almost daily posts on this board.

There's a couple dozen similar threads floating around on this forum. The only variation is that this time they don't claim to be from Microsoft

I've just never had it via a phone call before and sounding so immediate and as much as I tend to like to think I'm fairly good at spotting them, they nearly had me-until I asked for their actual internet details and got nothing.

How about starting by reading all the other threads on this one then?

That should keep you busy enough for a while!

The frequency of these "warning" threads is getting almost as bad as the actual scam itself!

Why doesn't MSE keep this scam (and any others currently doing the rounds) noted in EVERY weekly e-mail, people always come here when it is too late. Forewarned is forearmed.

I suppose a few years ago it would have been the same with the timeshare scams and people posting daily 'I just got a phone call telling me I had won a holiday.. is this for real?'

As to these calls, personally if my name was Cameron - I would pull all the direct phone lines from India and make them all operator connected only (50p surcharge) lines until their telecoms authorities got their house in order.

Got one from Global Wiz Tech last week. He was very insistent that I put on the computer. When I asked him if it was a scam he hung up.

If they call back I'm thinking of subjecting them to this.
