Was the electric bill in your name or the landlords?
If it was in your name; why did you give the money to the landlord when it was your bill?
If it was in your landlords name; why do they want to speak to you as it's a contract between the landlord and E-on
Also;do you have any evidence that you paid the money to your landlord?0 -
What does your contract state about utility bills?
Whose name is the EON account in?
Are you sure they are not passing the debt to a debt collection agency as opposed to solicitors?0 -
All sounds odd to me. The crucial piece of information... who's name is on the account?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Hi jas2day
As others have said, it depends on whose name the account was set up in.
If the account was in your name, we'll be looking to recover the electricity charges from you.
Did you receive any bills from us whilst you were at the property? If so, were they in your name?
Also, when did you leave the property? As arcon5 says, is it a DCA contacting you? It takes a long time and goes through many stages before solicitors become involved.
I would suggest talking to us about this. Although, if the account is in the landord's name, Data Protection will prevent us talking in any depth about the account.
Just moving on a stage, if the account is in your name, ask for a detailed breakdown. You need to see the dates the account runs between and what meter readings have been used.
Make sure the dates match the time you were living there. Did you keep a record of any meter readings whilst you were there?
If you did, make sure these have been used to bill the account.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction jas2day. Give me a shout if you need any more info as happy to help.
Malc“Official Company Representative
I am an official company representative of E.ON. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"0 -
And, if you did pay the Landlord, did you get any sort of confirmation/receipt that these payments were made?Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

If the account is in the landlord's name, I'd tell both E.ON and the landlord to take a running jump

If the account is in your name, I don't see why they would have approached your landlord in the first place.
Bingo! And this is why I said it all sounds a little curious...
