  • I have now connected the old hdd to SATA 1 (where the new one was connected) and that is recognised on IDE channel 3 master and is working fine.
  • It looks likely that the new drive could be a dud. Any chance of borrowing another SATA drive from somewhere just to repeat the exercise before sending the WD back under warranty? The older boards did list SATA under 'IDE' in the BIOS - quite confusing.
  • I dont think I can borrow another hdd to try. Is there anything else i can try before i return it. It was purchased locally from a company that sells parts and builds pcs so they would be able to check it if i took it back i would think.

That may be best - if it's a local firm then get them to check it and replace it if it's faulty. Then you can decide if you want to use two discs in the machine or transfer everything over to the larger disc including XP (but you may need the install discs).

Whay not ask the local firm if they'll install the disk for you? Shouldn't cost much, certainly much less than a new PC.

Assuming that you use the same cables as for your old hdd in the same sockets on the mobo, and the old one works, then if the BIOS doesn't recognise the new one, I would say it is faulty, and just take it back to the vendor and ask them to replace.

Assuming its not the likes of PCWorld (ugh!), any small PC shop should be able to check it out within seconds and either replace on the spot (assuming you have the receipt), or arrange a warranty replacement via WD (the latter usually takes about 2 weeks or so).

    Good luck!
  • Thanks for all the advice. Took it back and it tested ok. It turns out that my board has problems accepting any new hdds (according to a new friend who tried to help and googled it!!) Looks like i'll be getting a caddy to use it externally.
