Orange "free" 08457 phone line

I have been offered a 2nd home line with an 08457 prefix as part of an orange "broadband+home phone+line rental" package.
I am told it is "free" to use, but cannot find any information about incoming calls - i.e. is it free for me to phone home? Or are my friends and family charged when they call?
I have read threads about 0845 numbers generally, and some about 08457 numbers which are used by financial institutions etc. as a sneaky revenue stream. Is my phone provider piggy-backing on my/our collective ignorance to make a buck at our expense?:huh:

Sorry - it should read 08454 not 08457. Not sure if it makes a difference.0

Strange. Most VOIP lines can have a geographical or 056 prefix (I chose the former for mine so it was the same cost as my standard landline for anyone calling me on it). I've never hard of one with an 0845 prefix before.
0845 dialling is now inclusive in some calls packages (e.g. 0845 and 0870 calls are inclusive for me at weekends with my BT Unlimited Weekend calls plan).
BT's charges for non-inclusive 0845 dialling are 12½p call set-up fee plus 2.042p/minute between 7am to 7pm and 0.51p/minute between 7pm to 7am.
The majority of calls plans still charge for 0845 calls though. Virgin charge an outrageous 10.22p/minute at all times and, as far as I know, all mobile operators treat 0845 as premium rate numbers and that can mean up to 41p/minute on some mobile tariffs.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I thought orange had withdrawn Second Line for new connections. This sounds like the Livebox Phone line which has Geo & 0845 numbers to choose from. These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!
I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!0 -
Yes, this was a Livebox phone line. I have had it for a while but not used it much. But I have just moved house and plan to use it a bit more now. So the question only just occurred to me.
It looks as though I still have the choice to choose my 2nd number, so maybe I should change to a "Geo".
Thanks again.0 -
On behalf of those who might call you (particularly those who might call you from a Virgin Media line), may I urge you to do so.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market.
