Does anyone know of a credit card provider who will offer cards to people not on the electoral roll???

I am able to provide proof of address through current account bank statements and proof of earnings through wage slips.

I have not held any form of credit in the last 6 years.

I suggest you get a credit card from your bank. Anybody else will be very reluctant. You can request to be added to the Electoral Roll easily enough, although it will take a while to filter through to the CRAs.

I am not on the electoral roll (not UK citizen). I had a current account with Barclays and started with the Barclaycard a few years ago (as Reaper advices). The next one was Egg, though I did have some problems with my applications that time (even with Nationwide, which I also had current account with). Now I have about 10 cards besides those that I have already closed. No problems with applications any more.

I think it's a legal obligation to be on the electoral role for most people (apparently not if you're not a UK citizen).

If you don't have a reason not to be on it, then you should get yourself on it.

If you don't want junk mail then tick the box to not be on the "edited" register.

I bank with Natwest and they have in the last 12 months turned me down for a card even though my account has been run immaculately and I have paid no bank charges at all in that time.

I did try capital one late last year but they wanted a £200 deposit for a £200 credit limit which really didnt make any sense in going ahead.

  • If you take the secured card from Capital One and run it successfully for 6 months you will be able to
    a) get your £200 back and
    b) Apply for cards elsewhere

In the meantime you can get on to the electoral register

makes very good sense going ahead

If you're from another Commonwealth country you're still entitled to vote, even if you're not a UK citizen. If this doesn't apply you can write to the credit reference agencies and get them to put a note on your file explaining why you're not on the electoral roll.

It used to be the case that citizens from other EU countries are allowed to vote in local council elections but not general elections.
Irish citizens used to be able to vote in general elections as well as local elections.
I presume that is still the case.

I'm not a uk citizen, and it was difficult for me even to open a bank account when i first arrived.
HSBC then accepted to open a basic bank account for me to start, six month passed and i opened a current account with halifax (hsbc still do not want to upgrade my account, they use the tomorrow never comes), and now, I got a Credit card from barclaycard.
My advice is, apply where they're out to get you (station or commercial center), you have more chance then than going into their office or trough their website.

I just noticed a star under my username... the meaning? I do not know exactly.

    From the FAQ:
    What is the star system?
The more you post (write or reply to messages) on the boards, the higher-ranked MoneySaver you become. There are four levels and at each you get another star and change of title. The exact thresholds are a closely guarded secret. However, it’s all perfectly fair.
