Maybe not the most reliable but you can get a UV torch that you can use to check for security watermarks etc in notes for about £1.70 at https://www.ledshoppe.com . Takes 1-2 weeks for delivery though.

Don't be put off by buying from Hong Kong, this company are top notch.

There is no 100% reliable way of checking them unfortunately but UV is one option but if a note has been through the washing machine then it will fail that check.

Watermark, texture, silver thread etc are all checks you can easily do without any machines.

Other than that it is a business decision on how much risk you are willing to take... do you potentially turn down business because of a suspect note.

To check if a note is real - if you rub the coloured part of the note on white paper the ink comes off - if the ink comes off its real !! It works on all English notes.
