Help! Ongoing claim + car insurance renewal.

Bear with me. As a fairly new driver who has never had to deal with insurance claims before these may appear stupid questions.

A couple of weeks ago I had a very minor prang. Long story short I rear ended someone. Totally my fault and the other party would've been happy to settle between us as the damage was very minor but as it was a lease car she has had to make a claim.

I contacted my insurer for notification purposes only. I won't be making a claim as the only damage to my car was a cracked license plate and headlight cover.

Anyway, now my insurance is up for renewal and my premium has almost doubled! I need to change insurer but what happens to this ongoing claim? Will my new insurer take it up or will the previous one settle it even though I'll no longer be with them?

I assume it is the latter but don't want to jump to another insurer without being sure.

Thanks.

EDIT: Also, going through the price comparison sites now...when it asks have I made a claim in the last 5 years - what should I say? Technically I haven't claimed, only informed my insurer but I've heard plenty of stories of people getting hassle for similar things. It also then asks if the claim has been settled and the value of the claim. Well, it is ongoing and I don't yet have any idea what the value will be.

You can move and leave your old insurer to conclude the claim.

You have had a claim against you which you need to declare as a fault claim on comparison sites and to any new insurer you go to.

Unless you have protected NCD, then this claim will have resulted in you losing some NCD (2 years) and getting none for the current year which will explain the big jump in your premium.

Thanks, not too worried about the NCD, as I say fairly new driver so not losing much. I can get a quote with another insurer for approx. what I'm paying now but want to make sure I give all the right details so in the event of another accident I don't find myself uninsured.

So, I'm declaring the claim against me...what do I do when it asks the value of the claim and whether it was settled?

Either put "don't know", or find out the cost from your insurer. If not yet settled put "no".
  • Did you get this settled? How did you proceed? I'm going through a similar situation!

Hope you have a flask and a large tub of biscuits to hand.

They have not been on since august 2011.
