web page backgrounds not showing

I have a laptop which is somehow set to not show backgrounds on web pages. Everything else is fine - normal display is working properly, all drivers & Windows up to date etc. I didn't think this would be a problem but it does mean that certain webpages cannot be viewed properly because they rely on a different background to be seen. The problem affects IE(7) and Firefox so I'm guessing it's a setting in Windows itself. Anyone come across this or have any ideas?
