If you keep the telly, is your gf's mother really going to contact the police and say you stole it? Or launch a small claims court battle? Conversely if you or your gf says 'actually, Ma, the telly's legally ours, we've checked on MSE and you can't have it back' is she going to say 'well, in that case, not to worry, you keep it! Fancy a cuppa?'.

This isn't about the law, trust me. It's an irrelevancy. This is about a family spat, and you'd all do better concentrating on why relations have deteriorated so much rather than bickering over a telly.

If, like you say, it's always been a close-knit family, I bet your gf's and her mother's hearts are both breaking at the moment. Sounds like everyone's just really angry :(

This is a civil matter so the police will not be interested and I doubt the courts would be happy dealing with this.

Your GF should make the decision on what to do with the TV.. however, if she doesn't give it back then it is just another reason for there to be bad blood between them.

Fluffs advise is pretty spot on tbh.

It's just a telly. The size, type etc is unimportant, it is just a telly - don't let it cause you any more stress than needs be.

I think you should tell mother and daughter to sort it out between them. You're going to get blamed either way, just try not to inflame the situation by getting involved.
