    ............I don't have a spring catch...........

Every motorhome and caravan I've owned or even seen has one fitted.
    I would seriously get one.
They stop the door blowing open into traffic for one thing.

OP it sounds like your fault but its hard to say without seeing pictures

  • If its as the OP says and the door was already open there's no way its their fault. The position of the motorhome is completely irrelevant. If someone hits a stationary object they're going to be liable end of.

I'm not so sure. Surely this should just go via the insurer anyway?

Yes, it should go via the insurance. I'm interested though - what excuse could there be for hitting a stationary object? I could understand if the object was hidden in some way but a motor home door is pretty large as it the motor home itself.

You cant just go driving into things and then go blaming other people.

The thought have in my mind is driving home doing a manouevre half asleep that you do 365 days a year and suddenly here is an open door.

This does of course presuppose the door was opening onto the OP's neghbours ground where it should never have been.

From the post the main thing that can be gleaned is the OP and neighbour can't agree. We have no photos or sketches so there really is no way we can agree.

And we only have one side of the story. You can't really make ajudgment on this without hearing both sides.

Assuming the OP has explained it accurately then the neighbour is at fault.

The OP has muddied the water since starting the thread.

eg - why did he pose his "hypothetical" question about his neighbour being guilty of dangerous driving because they drove within inches of his caravan?

Why did he stay for 30 minutes after the incident recording the wind speeds?

It depends, the op has said there is no way to secure the door, so it's very possible it's been blown open, or simply swung out, as the neighbour went past.

It's not like a car door that has positions it comes to rest and stays open in.

There would be a very good arguement it was the op's fault for leaving it insecure in that case.

This is the point, it is not always the driver of the car hitting the stationary object who is at fault. In fact, under many circumstances, it is the person who put the object there, who is at fault. For example, it is a specific offence to open your door without checking the traffic. If a car hits that door, it is the person who opened the door who is liable.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
