Printer refusing to print in any colour cos 1 cartridge is empty? can I overide this?

Ok, here's the problem - I have a Brother DCP-120, it has 4 cartridges (3 colour, 1 black) all the cartridges have ink in except the blue which has run out.
I need to print something in black only, but the printer will not let me, even though the black cartridge is virtually full. I have changed the document to grayscale to see if that helps, but no luck!
In the print properties it says
"MFC will stop Colour/Greyscale print operations when one or more of the ink cartridges are empty."
Why is this? I am waiting for new cartridges to arrive, but really need to print some stuff off in black!!!
is there any way to get it to print? what a pain!
Any advice gratefully received!

Next time you refill or replace your ink cartriges set it to print in black only. I don't think it will work if you do it just now. You can give it a try though. We had the same problem - we have a Brother DCP 110.
Edited: Oops, just noticed you've tried already. It's a pain in the bum and the cartridges aren't that easy to get a hold of - we just filled the empty one with a syringe (refill pack) so we could get the already almost full black to work.0 -
thanks! speedy response there! but -How do you set it to print in black only? on the little screen on the printer itself, or via print properties?0

Through print properties.

You're right though - it is greyscale and not black. Just had a look to make sure.0 -

ok, looks like I will just have to wait for the new cartridges to arrive! I wish they warned you about this so you knew before one of them ran out!
thanks
