Hi, any help on the following would be appreciated from anyone who has been in the same situation before,
We returned from holiday today to find we had been burgled (still finding bits and pieces that were taken:(...) I rang the insurance company this afternoon to report the burglary and they took some details (not sympathetic to the situation at all - not that I'm surprised), ran through some jewellery that was taken etc and she said she will send a claim form out and that I would need to include any photos and receipts??
1. I don't have ANY photos (havn't looked yet but pretty sure I won't have receipts either) and some items were gifts.... Does this mean they won't give us any compensation?
2. Our front door was damaged where they broke in - they said to get it repaired or replaced - we want to replace it with a secure composite door as currently wooden - will this mean we can only have it repaired if door company don't feel it needs replacing?
Sorry for essay! Any help much appreciated

Hi, tried posting this a minute ago but went on someone elses thread - here it is again...
We got back from holiday to find we had been burgled
Rang insurance company to report burlary and ran through items which had been taken - most valuable items to us was some jewellery..
1. She asked to send receipts and photos with claim form...?? I defintely don't have photos and not sure if I have receipts (probably not) there were a couple of items left from deceased relatives which we have no idea of value, but were antique rings (more sentimental value - would give anything to get them back) :-(
2. Our front door was damaged where they gained entry and they told me to get an estimate for repair - we want a replacement with a more secure door to replace the current damaged wooden one. If the door people don't think we need a replacement would insurance company put towards a replacement one?
Sorry for the questions but I just have a feeling we are going to have a war on our hands...

One thing I would always recommend is if you have anything of value either specify it and keep the valuations up to date and also take photos.............two reasons for the photos........1) it helps the insurers to know what they are replacing and gives an idea of what it could cost to replace and 2) to pass to the police so if any of it does come to light then it can be returned...........
It does not mean they will not pay out but what they will ask for if you cannot find the receipts is estimates for replacement of the items...........
Re the door...........if the door is repairable then they would only be liable for those costs or those of replacement locks.........if you wanted to replace the door with a more secure/better quality door then you would be liable for any costs over and above that what the insurance company are going to pay for repairing the door or the direct replacement on a like for like basis.........
Hope this helps

Sorry to hear about the break in, not a nice thing to come from holiday to.
I was broken into a few months back, and like you i didn't have many receipts or photos, but I found what i could, photos of me wearing the jewellary, remote control for the tv, instructions manuals, cradles, basically anything to at least prove some of the stolen items existed.
Merlin claims were appointed to deal with my claim and came to visit me and talk through the break in and list the items taken etc.
Just claim for what was stolen and send whatever proof you do have for any of the items.
Good luck.Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -
Thanks for your replies and advice, I have never thought about taking photos before... lesson now learnt. Going to take pics of the jewellery we took on hols with us which wasn't around for the b******s to steal, just in case it happens again.... Silly thing is, we thought leaving the special items would be safer at home in case we lost them! It's sad that our late relatives keepsakes and jewellery which meant everything to us personally were taken - would give anything to get them back :-(
Thanks for the advice on the door too - reading our policy though this would be a building claim not contents (I think) so probably not worth paying 2 seperate excesses if door would just be repaired, got Anglian coming round for estimate Thurs, won't sleep soundly until new door is on!!
Thanks again0
