Iceland in Nov/Dec - anyone been?

Hi All,

Im planning to go here with my GF

Im aiming to go towards the end of Nov for about a week fro Gatwick.

We we were tempted to go to NY but it was costing far too much..
hope we have made the right choice!/

Any experiences? We both are looking for a cold winter place, not hot at all.

Hows the currency rate for Brits?? can we get much for our wad over there?

Ive seen the excursions os can plan alot before we go.

so far the flight looks at £300 each and a combined hotel about £400-£500 for the week.

thanks for reading..

  • I went at the end of September a few years back. In November it will be very cold with storms, just bear in mind that outside of the main cities, there is lots of open road with noone for many miles, if you rent a car make sure you take the proper precautions and take into account the weather. Off Route 1 many roads can be impassable for days/weeks without 4WD.

Blue Laggon by the airport is great!

Two years ago it was very expensive to buy things over there, I think it has got worse. Paid about £20 for a individual pizza, 'regular' food shop at home would have cost about £50 cost more like £200.

There is not much to see in Rejavik or Kflavik (sorry spelling) tbh, prehaps enough for 3 days or so, after that I would get out and see things like Geyser, the waterfall nearby that, Jokulsarlon, Brediamerkerjokull. Jokulsarlon is great for seeing seals and whales. If you want to hire a car these places are easy to get to (although maybe more than a days drive) but it may work out cheaper than the excursions.

I personally would treat it more as a tour and stay in a different place every night or so, there are many youth hostels that are cheap and you can also rent rooms from families quite easily. Depends how 'luxury' you like your holiday.

Don't be surprised about the water - it smells like rotten egg but is fine to bathe in and drink. Some hotels filter the water to get rid of the smell though. Also amuse yourselves by looking for removed roundabouts, towns get a roundabout once they get a bigger enough population, if the population drops, they take the roundabout down.

My memory is of the obscene price of any alcoholic drink.

On average Iceland is still a bit more expensive than Britain, but the collapse of the currency has made it more affordable. Alcohol is a lot less expensive than Norway. Re late November/December the days will be short, but it won't be as cold as many people expect. Some of the skiing places near Reykjavik now struggle to get enough snow in the winter.
