Holiday to Turkey

Hi all!

My girlfriend and I are going to Marmaris in Turkey this coming Friday and we are still unsure about what currency to take/use.

I've had mixed reports about people using Lira, Euros and Stirling...

Does anyone have any idea of what currency I am meant to take? Do I convert it in the UK and take it with me or exchange over there? What's the best value?

I'm not sure if it is different for various parts of Turkey but we are going to Marmaris so I expect there will be a lot of tourists/holiday makers.

Any information would be much appreciated...

Chris

  • The exchange rate is generally much better in Turkey than in the UK. So just exchange a small amount in the UK to get you through the 1st day or so until you find a Currency Exchange Office etc over there. There will be plenty around. Exchange your money into Turkish Lira. Some places may tell you they take only Euros but make it clear you want the Turkish Lira prices.

    Have a great holiday!
  • Hi

Me and my hubby had our honeymoon in turkey and found paying in lira to be cheaper. We took some euros too and got rid of these at one of the markets on a day trip. The exchange rate over here for lira is very good at the moment.

    Have a great holiday :D

I have often read about changing money in Turkey rather than in the UK and often been concerned about issues that may arise.

On the last trip (in May) I had to change money. I went to a small money exchange shop and asked for 100 Lira and entered my PIN. Upon receiving the cash and receipt I noticed I had authorised a 110 Lira transaction.

I queried the extra 10L and was told 'bank charge' and that was that. This translates to approx £4, 10% commission!

The one time I have changed money I have had this issue.

It is something I won't be repeating and I would never recommend anybody changes money away from their home country where issues can easily be resolved.

Another problem , if the item /service is marked in the Euro ( that includes Menus/Taxi fares ) and you wish to pay in the T.L , be prepared for some quick mental arithmetic.

So my advice , stick to the euro . You know exactly what you are paying .
    or
Think in Sterling , displayed in the Euro , haggled into the T.L and translated back into Sterling to find if you have been ripped off. All in the heat of the moment ........ sorry that was back in July .

You will lose out using Euro. Do not do it!

There are cashpoints everywhere and exchange shops. Use your phones calculator to make sure you are getting the right amount from exhanges and when haggling.

I found menu's etc list prices in Euro and Lira.

Completely agree , you will . But is the few pence you lose worth the hassle of juggling different currencies? Spend 5 mins searching for phone , entering numbers , getting a new price . repeating etc . All for a few coppers.

I was on holiday , time to chill out!

If you have a Halifax Clarity Credit Card just withdraw Turkish Lira from the ATMs with no charges

    Either clarity card or sterling

    Who needs a calculator

Rate today is about 2.8Tl to the £
    £10 = 28TL
    £100 = 280TL
Couple of weeks ago it peaked at just under 2.9TL to the £

Saw a place last night that was offering 3TL to the £ against the bill

Everywhere I look people are willing to change my money

    Have a nice holiday
