I have been a subscriber to The Independent for years and the old system worked well. Vouchers were dated two weeks past the end of the nominal subscription period to allow for holidays. The new system fits the dates to the subscription period and any unused vouchers have to be returned for credit.
I returned vouchers in December 2010 but the amount was not offset against my next subscription. I called the Belfast office that issues the vouchers and was told that the amount showed as a credit on my account and a cheque would be sent. It did not arrive so I called again and was told the amount would be offset against my next subscription. It was not. I called again and was told a cheque would be sent but would take 6-8 weeks! Nothing came so I called again and was told the cheque had been sent but a new one would be issued. Still nothing. I emailed The Independent's own Question of Cash columnist, Paul Gosling. He replied that he would try to find out to whom he should refer the matter. Three weeks later - nothing. I am cancelling my direct debit and warn anyone else against taking a subscription. Good newspaper, dreadful customer service.
