Now: made personalised mother's day card on computer
Then: would have bought a shop one.

Now: have bought full fat milk and am topping it up with water
Then: would have bought skimmed milk at the same price, but which is basically the same as diluted full fat

Now: am using half the amount of shampoo I normally used but it does the job just as well
Then: took a big dollop most of which ended up down the plughole

Now: got in a chinese takeaway for me and a friend on Saturday night and kept the leftovers for Sunday
Then: would have gone out for a meal at double the price at least

Now: got fruit and veg dirt cheap at market
Then: would have got some shiny bland overpriced stuff at the supermarket

Now - Made all the cakes and biscuits for the lunchboxes
Then - would have bought the usual from Tesco

Now - use half the quantity of fabric conditioner
Then - Used the recommended dose and had the bottle disappear in half the time.

Now - hunted round the shops for a gallon of vinegar
Then - Laughed at the thought of using vinegar for cleaning and washing

Now argued with the checkout girl when she tried charging me £1.99 instead of the £1.29 I'd been told it was.
Then - Wouldn't have argued for the sake of 70p

Now- Struggled home on the bus with a mini greenhouse and a gallon of vinegar plus other assorted items.
Then taken a taxi home and paid a fiver for the privilege of travelling an extra 200 yards.

bought ingredients to make a birthday cake rather than buying a shop bought one.

and then, as i had the ingredients, could make a banana loaf to use up the unrecognisable black things lurking in the fruit bowl, rather than throwing them out.

  • Well I grated my soap flakes (making sure I washed and rinsed it thoroughly before grating cheese for lasagne!!).

I washed some really dirty clothes  and it seems to have worked a treat!! Very grateful to Queenie for mentioning it on her post! And to everyone who translated washing soda for me!:o
    Cheap as chips!
I found link that mentioned using tea tree oil in water as a mould and mildew remover has anyone tried this with any success?

    Then

Looked longingly at some really pretty but expensive body warmer style jackets for my girls........

    Now

Just took their 2 best coats from this winter (would normally have been added to the chairty shop pile as the sleeves are too short), took the glittery fleecy lining out of both and cut of sleeves to make glittery furry sleeveless jackets, did the same with the outer coat for one and stripped the lining out of the other to use as a painting overall for some of my little charges (I'm a child minder). Took the sleeves of the glittery furry ones - cut them down and turned them into lined handbags - just need to find something for the handle!!

I amazed myself and the girls are more than impressed with the result!!!

Looking at some old jeans stashed away in the back of the wardrobe now....hmmmm I wonder what I could do with those!! ;)

Do you find the HM washing pwder as effective as the gloop? I've been making gloop for about a year but the powder looks easier with no mixing 'n' stiring. I have a large top-loader which uses gallons of water. If I now use 1-2 mugs of gloop per wash how much HM powder would I need to use? Thanks MATH

  • I never really got on with the gloop, didn't seem to clean that well and I got residue left sometime on the clothes. I used 2 tablespoons as these clothes were really dirty but it was recommended to use one normally. I put it all in a big jar and gave it a very good stir and shake. I used the small holes in the grater and it mixes very well.:)

Today I feel well chuffed :D

Now: Baked "Queen Cakes" (what else! ;) ) "Cut n Come Again" cake, 12 jacket potatoes (some for today, fresh; some to be mashed for tomorrow's meal); made a sandwich loaf; made a meatloaf and a casserole; made a veggie soup from the veggies that bulked out the meatloaf and casserole.
Leaves me free tomorrow to get on with other tasks.

Then: Would have read through the recipes books, got sidetracked by other ideas, recipes, "one day"s ... realised I hadn't even defrosted anything ... checked out other ingredients for the other inspired ideas I had ... noticed I didn't have half of them .... realised it was teatime *now* ... ..... popped out and got a takeaway with a half hearted promise to try better the next day thus ensuring no other tasks actually will get done!
