Something here, Weg......http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1154515439,15611,
..there is cheaper insurance than British Gas, Swinton's is one, but better to insure yourself by putting so much away each month/year.0 -
Don't forget to read the small print as like any insurance cover varies wildly, for example some may pay for a new boiler or contribute to it if it is broken beyond repair but not others, or have a claims limit, etc, etc.0

I took out the BG heating cover (the 200 level, so it covers the radiators as well as the boiler) when I moved into my house in July. They've been fantastic so far - boiler was serviced within a fortnight, and they've been out 3 times to sort out a boiler problem and leaking radiator pipes. I knew my boiler was at least 9 years old though, which is partly why I took out the cover. If it had been newer I'd have saved the same amount per month.
My brother's family didn't have anything similar and got home on Boxing Day to find the boiler had broken. BG were the only people prepared to come out then and fix it (they rang various national and local companies).
The only thing I would suggest though, is if you have any extra work done, to get quotes from local plumbers etc too. I got a quote from BG for fitting electrostatic radiator valves, and the quote from the local plumber was half that!0 -
British gas are in it to make money, they trade on their past reputation which, alas, they no longer deserve
I think you'lll find that their fitters get commission if they can persuade you to have a new boiler installed. I've come across more than a few cases where customers have been, incorrectly, told that the part they need to repair their boiler is no longer available
My suggestion would be to phone your local authority to find out who they use to maintain their social housing. They might not be the best deal you can get, but they should at least be reputable (FSVO !) and competent to do the job0
