Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-8500, DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 2GB per slot.*

Looking on Amazon, I see prices for 200 and 240 pins memory. Would someone please advise me what number of pins I would need for my desktop?

Thank you.

Probably DDR2 PC2-5300 - but if you check your computer by opening it, you might find some stickers on the chips you have ready with some information on them - with number of pins - or you can count them :-)

Or stick the model/make into crucial web site - if its a branded machine, crucial site tells you what you need.

240 pin is for desktops, 200 for laptops.
What motherboard do you have ? - read it or use cpu-z http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.58-setup-en.exe

If you've done a Crucial scan then buy the correct memory from them! They seem quite competitive on DDR2 at the moment

Thank you all for the replies.

I did a Crucial scan but was unsure on pins.

I was unaware it was 240 pin for desktops, 200 for laptops. I intend to buy from Crucial, just wanted to make sure.

"is 2 GB not enough?". I want to do some simple video editing and I was advised to up from 2 to 4.

Are you running XP or Windows 7? If Windows 7, is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Unless you are using Windows 7 64-bit you would only be able to use about 3 ± 0.25 GB of RAM, even if you have got 4 GB installed.

John, Windows 7/32-bit. I was aware (read it on here) that I would not be able to use all 4GB but am I correct in thinking that I should install 2 x 1Gb (as a pair) rather than just 1GB on it's own?

    Thanks.

Usually it doesn't matter much, although on some motherboards "paired memory" is very slightly more efficient. It would be difficult to observe this!

Not sure if it is still the case, but Crucial and Kingston used to be the only 2 original manufacturers of memory - everyone else is a reseller and the cheaper ones may be resellers of lower graded IC's. I have used Crucial extensively, always been great and keenly priced from experience.
