Tesco coupon refused

Hi together with my DD we save all of our clubcard coupons for our annual holiday which we have just returned from. When we went into ryde to get our shopping one of my coupons was refused as they said it had been previously scanned This I found odd as I put them away in the cupboard at home as soon as they are sent to me and they are only brought out when we go on holiday .I went to my local tesco's today and they said the same .To which I replied if they had been scanned you would have kept it and I wouldn't have had it in my possesion.the girl agreed but I now have to phone Tesco's head office to find out why my coupon was refused .I don't shop online and never use the coupons until we go on holiday.has anyone else had this happen .I know its only £2.50 but its been bugging me ever since it was turned down

  • Yes, it has happened to me (although just using the coupon in normal shopping).

I made them keep scanning it until it came up with the correct answer. The assistant told me it happens all the time :(

Sometimes the coupons don't scan through straight away and come up with invalid, some other error or the SA comes up with a reason why it won't work. I usually, quietly but confidently, stand my ground with the SA and also make them keep scanning until it goes through. For some reason it isn't always straight forward, but it does usually go through in the end. Some of the SAs are easily put off at the slightest difficulty but the good ones who are helpful will continue to keep trying and find alternative ways to get it through.

You can check the status of your Clubcard vouchers online. It will show which vouchers you have outstanding and which you've used and where and when you've used them. If the voucher in question is listed as being unspent, you could try reprinting it (I think you can do that) or contact Tesco Central Command to inform them of the problem.

I've also had the other way around. I used some vouchers on deals (sent them off, received the deals vouchers back, used them etc) and one of them was still listed as being available to spend. I think (being an honest person) I even queried it with the helpline as I was calling about something else, and they just said well it's still listed as being active so we can cancel it and re-credit the points for you if you want (??). So I got the same points twice. Very kind of them!

Often the cashier can't just accept "if I had already used them, I wouldn't still have them", because anyone can use them online for a home shop delivery, for Clubcard Rewards etc, and still keep the physical vouchers.

I know that isn't the case here, but what's to stop unscrupulous people using their vouchers online for a home shop, then trying to use them again instore and insisting that they never used them? You can see Tesco's reasoning if they direct you to Clubcard H.Q.

By the way, check the date on your voucher- sometimes Tesco re-send outsend vouchers that are close to expiring- so if the vouchers go out of date within the next few weeks it's possible that you will receive them again. However, once the new vouchers are on the way to you, the old ones stop working.

  • a silly question, but what is a "DD". I keep reading the first sentence of the original post and can't understand who/what a "DD" is.

Actually, I checked this for the first time last week, having seen it mentioned in another thread. Instead of finding unused coupons as other people have done, I found I had paper coupons which weren't on the on-line record. I knew I hadn't used them so e-mailed CS at Clubcard and they confirmed my coupons were unused and didn't know why they ween't showing on-line!

I phone Tesco HQ and they agreed it was a glitch and have put 250 points on my card for the next mailing which I shall check when it comes in.The very helpful lady there apologised and said that sometimes the cash mashines at the check out do have gremlins in them.So at least she agreed that I hadn't spent them. She could even tell me what time and where I was on holiday when we spent the rest of our coupons .Bless her she hoped we had enjoyed our holiday as well .Sometime you are lucky to get a polite person and I hung up feeling thoroughly vindicated and not a daft old biddy who had made a mistake :):)
