Help Bulk Up my Boyfriend on a Budget....

Well, it's a husband really... but never let that get in the way of a good heading... ;) (edit perhaps Help Get my Husband Heavy:rotfl:)

Anyway, we have quite a strict budget for food each week and I am on a strict diet. So it's all fresh veg, fish, salad, free range chicken etc..

My OH is slender, slight, slim... he wants to bulk up, however, he's not really going to do so on the food we buy for the week.

Can anyone give tips about cheap, filling bulk up food for a slim male mid 30's? He loves cheese, oat biscuits, chocolate but does like to eat healthily - he doesn't have a great interest in food - I literally have to say, hey grumpy, have you eaten to which he either replies he can't remember when he last ate or has forgotten to have breakfast/lunch etc..

if I place food in front of him, he'll usually eat it, otherwise he is engrossed in other things (computer, reading etc..) and just forgets to eat (yes, that's right.... forgets... !!!!!!? ;))

So cheap filling yummy ideas please for someone who wants to bulk up on a budget...

Thanks!

Does he need to bulk up? Sounds like he has a very healthy diet and is healthy.

Sorry, I missed that he wants to.

Just eat more, but usually more active workouts will build muscle and give him more appetite.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Yes he does want to bulk up. He does exercise - weights, pull ups (can do about 10 which is an amazement in itself! - I cant' do one!). He can build muscle pretty quickly, however, loses it also pretty quickly due to not eating, eating with huge gaps etc..

with the just eat more - that's the issue - need ideas for what do eat on a budget that will bulk him up...

If he wants to build muscle mass he needs to have a good weight workout routine, and to increase his protein intake and reduce he is carb intake.

Lot's of veg, lot's of chicken. If you Google Paleo diet you'll find lot's of information. To bulk up though the key will be the workouts as much as what he eats.

Sounds like he has quite a low carb diet at the moment so would suggest he increase his intake on those. Things like pasta, rice and pots are very cheap and filling. Also eating more often can help - eg 5 small meals a day instead of 3 large ones can give him more energy for exercise - when OH was trying to put weight on we would make a massive pot of soup and freeze it in portions so he would just take one out and reheat at periods through the day.

If by bulk upping you mean build muscle mass then it's anything high in protein, but that will only work if he has a good workout routine too.

Does he have a training plan, or is he just doing some random weights exercises?

Most folk I know that are in to this stuff load up on eggs at breakfast, chicken and veg during the day and many have protein shakes straight after workouts, but those shakes are anything but cheap.

High carb is good for getting fat, or endurance athletes who burn the energy they provide. They are the worst thing you can eat if you want to build muscle.

    What about the superfood Quinoa?

I get it at Tescos or Holland & Barrett when my son is home on leave and I use it to replace rice, carbs, potatoes and cous-cous in his meals. (He has to keep fit and strong and bulky since he burns a lot of calories in his job as a soldier.)

I add it to soups, gravy, porridge and sauces and the rest of the family don't even notice it :D

It's mostly protein with huge health benefits, it's gluten free, full of fibre and iron and easy to digest. It's ridiculously simple to cook (cover with hot water, boil like mad with the lid on for a few minutes, turn off the heat and allow the grains to absorb the rest of the water. Serve hot or cold.)

    Good luck!
