Council Tax in shared house

Options
Hi,
I am going to rent a house. We are four professionals. The council tax for the property by the valuation list is approximately 1360 pounds a year. Does it mean that every individual in the house must pay this amount or it's 1360 divided by the number of individuals living in the house?

Thank you
Ryan

Council Tax is charged per property so £1360 is the total payable, to be shared between you.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you MsShorty.

And there is another thing. The amount is taken from property valuation list.Is the amount same for shared house or one family house, because I heard, that it also depends on number of people living in the house and type(one household or shared).

    Thanks

It doesn't matter how many people live there unless it's just a single person in which case they would get a 25% discount (or a single person with children who would get the same).

Whether it's 4 people or 40, the council tax is still the same...
  • Clear answer lvm,thanks :-)

Are you renting the property as a whole or are you renting a room each ?.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • I am renting the whole house. The question is if it makes any differnce to the final council tax amount.

It doesn't make a difference to the amount but it does make a difference as to who pays it - if you rented only part of the property/room then payment would fall on the landlord.
