hairline crack in sink

Options
Well not sure what part of the site to post this in but here goes.

My sister came back from a night out and after getting out of the taxi realised she had mislaid her keys. Managed to knock the neighbours up and they kindly let her stay the night and she got a locksmith in, in the morning to get into her house.
However, during her overnight stay, somehow she managed to cause a hairline crack in their bathroom sink. She says they had a very heavy soap dispenser above the sink and it fell in.

Of course they want her to pay for the replacement of the sink and have said they got a quote for £200 . Is this reasonable? They have even emailed her their bank details (even though they just live upstairs) and asked her to put in £150 in advance so they can get on with the work

It entirely depends what basin they intend to fit so no idea if its reasonable or not to be honest. Put a cheapo in for £60 or an expensive one for £500. Its prolly not too much work if its like for like so £30 - £50 labour plus cost of basin. Expensive night out then - what with cost of locksmith to be added.

    Cheers

  • Dont think she can really argue her case. Do you? As for sending her an email .Its just the way things are done these these days. People like some sort of paper trail if things turn nasty
  • Keystone... Would you honestly replace a sink for £30 quid?

Seems fair enough to me, and in the long run could work out as a cheap lesson for her.

Thanks for replies. Yes I appreciate they were very kind in letting her stay etc but also dont want her ripped off (as she seems to think ) Im inclined to think the same as you (that she cant really argue her case) .
Yeah expensive night out. Dont think she will do that again in a hurry :o

No I wouldn't but I might replace a basin for £30 if it was two doors down the road from me, it was like for like replacement and the client had all the necessary bits before I knocked on the door.

It all depends on the price of the porcelain as stated. Until you know what they want to fit you can't be sure that its a "rip-off" for one single solitary minute. I believe they are entitled to have a replacement of the same type as they have already don't you? If it was a £150 one in the first instance sorry but that hardly constitutes a rip-off to me.

    Things:

If they want her to pay for it then she should at least be able to see the quote they have got from the plumber. How does she know that the plumber is actually charging £200. He could be charging £150 and they are making a mark up.

She should be able to get a second opinion from another plumber. He may be cheaper.

This is covered under buildings insurance - damage to fixed sanitary ware is covered even if its iis accidental on the vast majority of insurance policies. Then she has just got to pay the excess.

I think they are being a bit heavy about it. Accidents happen.

Phils right about insurance but I assumed (perhaps erroneously) that £200 would be around the excess mark so there would be little point in going through insurance as they'll have to pay that sum anyway.

    Cheers

Edit: As yes she should be shown a copy of the quote to see what she is being asked to pay for.
