As for Virtual PC Doctor (see another thread inder Techie Stuff), these guys call you out of the blue, and give you the usual guff about being appointed by Microsoft, and able to resolve problems such as slow running etc.
They log onto yr PC via Logmein, and download three programs which are free to use if you did this yourself. 1. ATF Cleaner (only for XP even though they were using Vista); 2. Auslogics Disk Defrag; and 3. CCleaner. For this they charge £113!!!!!!!
Some punters do actually agree to this, its obviously worthwhile for these con merchants - so spread the word and save the gullible, and mostly older PC users some grief.

I had one from an Eastern European woman from "Megabyte Computing" or similar the other day. At least it made a change from thickly-accented Indians called Nigel who "work for Microsoft". But it is funny how quickly they put the phone down when you accuse them of being crooks.0

I kept the last scammer going for a good 5 mins, first he asked me to turn on the computer which I said I was doing, and waiting, and waiting as it was slow to boot up, amazingly he kept hanging on, then he asked me to go to the start button and I said I didn't have one, after him asking me to try this and that and me replying that I can't find it I then told him I used Linux, he asked his manager then said he couldn't 'help' me.
Well it made me chuckle.
