Getting account details

Hi Guys

Been a while since I posted on here but i'm hoping the vast amount of expertise of the forum.

Basically I gain a couple of defaults about 3 years ago, one with mint and one with capital one. I read some where you can ask for these to be removed by stating the reasonings you feel it should be removed.

My partner tried it and it worked so I thought I would give it a shot. 2 letters down the line I head nothing from either company until yesterday when mint contacted me saying they were unable to proceed with my request as I hadn't provided my account details.

Stupidly I got rid of that information a while ago so I thought I would contact Mint via phone to see if they can find me by my address and date of birth.

On the call they said they have no way of finding my records as it is over a specific amount of time and they dont have any way of sourcing my information.

Any clues how I can go about finding out my account details so I can proceed with asking to have this default removed.

Cheers in advance

By account details I assume you mean the account number?

This all looks like an excuse by mint not to address your problem. Your details will probably have been removed from the live system available to call centre staff so providing additional information will not make your details come up. If the staff can't find anything by name, address etc then they probably won't find anything by account number either. But this does not mean that the company no longer has access to the details. I believe there is a legal record keeping requirement for a company of six years? They will need to put themselves out to retrieve this information from wherever it is stored and just don't want to go to the trouble.

I suggest you write again, providing name on record, address on record and date of birth and tell them that this is sufficient information for them to locate the account details. But remember though, when you write to them later asking them to remove the default for ... whatever reason ... you are going to be asking them a favour, so try to be nice to them.

I don't know if this account has been settled or not, but if not, then telling them that you want to pay them some money may assist them in locating your account.

If this fails, then I am thinking that you could ask them to remove the default on the grounds that they cannot produce evidence that the account ever existed and that a default cannot have occurred on a non-existent account or something along those lines.

Sorry.. Yeah I'm trying to get hold of my account number so I can beg them to take the default off.

The account was settled back in jan 09 and the representative said they don't keep information that far back.

I'm in a difficult position, on one hand I need to stay nice and civil as I'm asking them to do me a favour but on the other hand they strike me as being a bit unhelpful and in these cases I would usually kick up a fuss.

I would like to try the tact of how can you have a default on an account you have no record of but if they can't find the details how would they remove it?

Could I ask what "reasoning" you've both used?

A letter was sent basically appealing to their good nature. Explaining that the default was on a such a small amount, it was paid off and now it's effecting our chances of getting a mortgage 4 yrs on.

I fully except the reasons why the default was placed on, it was because I couldnt manage my finances correctly, I was immature and I failed to think about the future effect it would have.

Obviously completely my fault but I see no harm in trying to better my credit rating.. If it works great if not I'll learn to live with it.
  • So does your CRA report now show the default as settled?
If so it is factually correct and will not be changed or deleted until after 6 years.

My credit report does state there is a default and that it is indeed settled.

It's a fair point you make about it being factually correct but how can you explain what happened when my partner had her default removed?
  • No idea perhaps she could post on here the full story.

Well to be honest as you have settled them in full i have read lenders removing defaults in this situation - i know someone who has wrote the same kind of thing with result so you never know, a long shot it is but hey worth a try. :)
