Xmas and New Year

I currently work 20hrs over a 3 day period and my days are a Mon, Sat, Sun. As admin staff (ward clerk) within then NHS we're not required to work bank holidays etc if we choose not to. Last xmas though, we were told by management that all xmas and new year was to be covered from now on and the staff whose days fell on these days etc would be expected to to work them.
The theory is that this is fair since it would come round to each member of staff on their working days each year at some point so we'd all get a turn. Now whilst I'm always more than co-operative I'm thinking it's a bit much to expect me to work xmas eve (Sat this year), xmas day (Sun) and boxing day (Mon)....I'll then get new years eve (Sat), new years day (Sun) and bank holiday (Mon).
That's a lot isn't it when you consider that the other member of staff on the ward won't be doing any! How's this fair and bearing in mind next year I'll still be falling for more than my fair share.
Am I being unreasonable to question it?

No - but you are just a tad late! Since they told you this last year, they have varied your contractual terms and you are too late (legally) to do anything about it.0

Why? Most NHS workers I know get normal time for bank holidays and just a day in lieu.0 -
If you are going to have to do it I think you just going to have to think along the lines that it is only a few hours each day in those days (20hrs divided by three) although if you have family it's not nice really.
Out of interest if you don't mind me asking how do you find the job? as I was looking at this job advertised the other day in my local NHS hospital on the NHS website?.0 -

most NHS trusts dont pay overtime or extra rates anymore so you're basically getting single time in lieuI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. i'm guessing you copied and pasted that from:
http://www.rcn.org.uk/support/pay_and_conditions/supplements_-_unsocial_hours__and__oncall/unsocial_hours
but omitted the first lineAfC unsocial hours payments while on annual leave - AFC Section 13
New arrangements have been confirmed for payment of unsocial hours on annual leave.0 -

I don't now any trusts, from my own exprience that do this. I've only ever known the payments as per getmore4less's post. The trust I work for however will only pay us the bank holiday rate for a maximum of 2 dates over christmas. So say last year I worked christmas eve, christmas day, boxing day and bank holiday monday, I would only get paid 2 bank holidays, say for instance christmas day and bank holiday monday, then I would get sunday pay for boxing day and nothing extra for christmas eve as it's not a BH. No trusts I have known have a day off in lieu either, because if you are not off automatically on BHs it forms part of your annual leave entitlement. Not sure if that makes sense?! :cool:0
