Cost of self storage

It's likely that I'll have to move to find work in the near future, and it's also likely that there will be a gap of 6 - 12 months between selling my house and buying a new one. So in between I will need to store my possessions. When I had to do it for about 3 months previously I used the removal comany's storage facility, but I assume it would be cheaper to use self storage. Can anyone give an estimate for how much it's likely to cost? Do they charge a lower rate for longer periods? I've used an online estimator and I reckon I'd need 100 - 150 square feet, depending on how ruthless I can be at getting rid of stuff before I leave.

We're in central London, so unlikely to be able to assist given your location, but I'd suggest :
- 6-12 months is a decent length of time, so definitely negotiate!
- Most self storage operators have initial offers, but be sure to work out the total cost of storage over the length of time you intend to stay
- Insurance (required by most operators) can be expensive and the price varies greatly - be sure to include for this
- You're looking at a pretty big unit - again worth shopping around & negotiating
There's more advice on our ABC Selfstore website (not allowed to post link) but look for the "Self Storage for Beginners" section.
