If the 14 year old in question deserves a £400 gadget, and has no plans ever to work for a living then an iPad will be ideal. Meanwhile over in the real world, young people entering the world of competing for employment will need to have mastered keyboard typing and basic business applications (that use keyboards) by the time they complete their education.

    Love it.
I hear Apple have another product coming out soon. Apparently it's going to be called "the Emperor's New Clothes".

    Laptop all the way...

The ipad is a cool gadget, nothing more, nothing less. Just get him a ipod touch as his next present, its more or less the same thing with diffrent apps for them both.

He is much better with a laptop, power, games, web experience, storage, upgrades etc..

You get him an ipad 2, then before you know it the ipad 3, is out then the ipad4 etc...

I own allot of apple hardware on the PC side, but the ipads have always been a gymic to me, the only reason for its success it the word APPLE on it.

By Christmas the iPad should be running on the new operating system, so although it might need plugging into your PC to set up initially, it wouldn't need to be connected to the computer again afterwards, providing you have WiFi set up at home.

The new iOS will be released sept/oct, and will not require a pc/mac at all, will be able to be set up completely on it's own...
