i've had a look at the sub£350 laptop thread but i am wondering if anyone knows of good student deals on laptops (not Macs)

You should concentrate on finding the best deal, then check if there are any student discounts available. The majority of 'student deals' I've seen tend to be poor value for the student, but great marketing value for the retailer.0

try dell.
google "Dell EPP" - which is a program offering discounts for employees and students. Its a sliding scale, the higher the unit price the more the discount
you can also apply for an "NUS Extra" card (cost £11) for which dell will give you an extra 5% off. (not to mention numerous other discounts from various companies)
