Hi all
Halifax possess the house deeds from over 30 yrs ago. The mortage is paid so how do I go about obtaining them without being charged rediculous fees?
Has anyone had similar probs?
Thanx:beer:

Once the mortgage is repaid, Halifax is entitled to charge whatever fee it quoted in your original terms and conditions to release the deeds and have the charge removed.

Northern Rock tested this some time ago by increasing fees to existing long-term borrowers to be slapped down by the FSA and told to charge what it originally stated at the inception of the mortgage.

If what you own is a freehold house and it's registered at HMLR, forget the Deeds. The mortgagee (Bank of Scotland plc t/a Halifax) is under a legal duty to discharge the mortgage registration at HMLR; and that leaves you with a clean title for which £4 will bring you up-to-date official copy entries issued by HMLR.
