HMV screw up and refuse to make good

Options
I ordered an item from HMV.co.uk in plenty of time for delivery before Christmas. However I ended up receiving the item in the nick of time on the 23rd, the day I was due to leave London to return to the parental home for a few days.

I ordered a CD soundtrack which came with an additional DVD. It was not a bonus DVD as you had to pay more for that version with the DVD. What came however was the CD only version. I did not have a lot of choice and was forced to give the CD as a gift to my niece anyway. Even if the CD had come on time I doubt there would have been time to send it back and get the correct product sent out.

I contacted HMV customer service and they are basically refusing to even refund me the difference between what I paid and the price of the item I received. They can only issue refunds of any kind when the item is sent back, despite the fact that it was Christmas and postage (dispatch rather than the postal service) was so late.

It is only a few pounds, but it could have been more and the principal remains the same. They have not denied that their system shows what I ordered (and paid for) was difference to what was dispatched, therefore this is purely a case of dumb policy. Last time I order from HMV.
