Cylinder Vacum Cleaners

I've got a dyson just now which I've had for about 8 years and overall have been really happy with but its had its day and am looking to replace it.
I remembering owning a cylinder hoover years ago and it being really quite hard to use - it required a lot of effort and was quite back breaking and I was never that impressed with the job it did. I then started buying uprights which I found to be a lot more easier to use and appear to do a far better job.
Anyway fast forward 20 years and am now in the market again for a new vacum - are cylinders still as hard to use as what I remember them to be or have they massively improved? I'm really torn between another dyson or a henry, I've always been happy with my dysons but if I can get a Henry that does just as good a job for a lot less money then I'd happily change but don't want to end up with a back breaking hoover that doesn't do a great job.
Any advice or comments appreciated.

I bought a Miele in January and I really like it. I bought the hepa version as my son has excema. It is a bit hard to push as the suction is so good. If you buy the pet version you get the turbo brush, which i've heard is a lot easier to push. You can the head separately but they cost about £40-£50.

This is the model nearest to my one. Excuse the shouting man but he gets the point across about how good it is!

I have a Henry. They are a commercial machine and used by virtually all cleaning companies. The motors are extremely robust an long lasting. The body and accessories are very strong. I've dropped mine down the stairs and no damage at all.

They are simple to operate and do an excellent job. I haven't used a bag in mione for years as it works just as well without one. The tubes are stainless steel not plastic like a Dyson

You will find many people on her recommending Henrys too.

Thanks for the replies, the miele does seem to get good reviews and not an option I'd really thought about.

Hi both me and my mum have miele's and their excellant. My folks are farmers and I have a dog who drops a million hairs a minute :rotfl: so both households put them through their paces! My mums is about 12yrs old and mines about 5yrs old and both are still going as well as when we first bought them. My mum had dysons before but they only lasted a couple of years, the miele's are much better.

    Hope this helps :)

I have Miele cat and dog, amazing. Bags last forever! Tried Dyson and hated the flimsy plastic, bulkiness and not amazing suction, so returned it and bought Miele instead.
I guess if you only have carpets then buy upright, but I'd still go for Miele.
  • After lots of rubbish uprights including D*son, we went for a Miele cylinder with a powered head. They are still quite hard to push across the carpet, but that is a sign of how good they are. You can always reduce the suction for an easier push. They always win the Which tests and like all Miele appliances are very reliable. Bags are quite expensive but cheaper prices on line. You get what you pay for though and even the bags are high quality. We were so impressed, I picked up a secondhand one to keep in the garage to clean out the car. It was amazing and lifts out all the muck and residue of bags of compost in the boot with no problem. I do not think we shall ever use another brand

The bags do last quite a long time though. I've had bagless ones in the past and have coughed and sneezed everytime when using the vacuum, but I don't do it now. I'd never go back to a bagless.

Get a Sebo upright. The Automatic versions adjust for different carpet pile heights and wood flooring automatically. Nowt better out there. The tools store neatly on the body and you get a long hose for stair cleaning too. There's also an air-powered stair tool you can buy.
