Best holiday destination in oct?

Ok, we have just returned home from rome and have all caught the travel bug totally.
i wanted to start thinking about holidays next year, and needed some advice. My son (8) loved rome, with all the history, ruins etc and took hundreds of pics. We ideally wanted to go in the oct half term or end aug next year, to give us the max. time to save.
We are not opposed to heat, and do want somewhere warmer than the uk, and would love it if it had a longer flight than rome.... but the budget would still be £1500 ish for flights and hotel... any ideas?
