  • Thanks for the replies, sorry if I offended you anglesmomma, didnt mean to. However from what you have typed (cant tell that much as dont want to be accused of generalising again) but you are clearly very different from the 'ladies' who live in my street. Do you stroll around in your pj's all day, do you allow your children to stay up til 11 at night, do your children know the f word at the age of 4, have you been on Jeremy Kyle to prove the identity of your childrens father??? Sorry single mothers genreally have my respect as I know from when I am alone with the kids while my husband is away working, how hard it must be I couldn't do it. Unfortunately I do have to hang around and drink tea with them as I dont feel I can leave my children out in the street by themselves playing so we are all out together. But as explained I am not apologising for wanting the best for my kids. I am not the only person in the street who feels like this, infact there is one lady who has lived in this street since she was 6 months old and is now looking to move too. Anyway its all by the by we want to move and the general feeling seems to be that we should sell up rather than rent out. So thanks everyone!
The village/town we live in is actually a nice area, just we bought at the height of the property prices and in possibly the worst street in the area. So we wouldnt be wanting to move far.
Poppysarah - you are right I do suffer with depression and on medication for that, but I now am starting to think that this situation is a lot to do with my mood.

Thanks again for the replies, but dont think I'll be posting on this forum again. Better start decorating everywhere cream and get on to an estate agent!!

I admit I am sensitive to people making generalisations about single mothers.

I would not like to live where you do from what you say, unfortunately I have lived in places like that in the past, Moss side, Old trafford and Longsight Manchester being a few of the not so nice places. I have had people shot dead outside my house. I do understand your position.

I got out by keeping my head down paying off my 15 year mortgage in 7 years and moving on. Its not easy but can be done. I too suffered from depression and was admitted to hospital for it twice.

PS moneysaver, I do not have a chip

My point is it can get better and my advice would be just sell up and rent somewhere, life is too short to be that unhappy.
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.

Last week there was a murder in a quiet, "respectable", non council built cul de sac in a small Bedfordshire town. Serious crime is not confined to "bad" areas.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I know you don't want to let your friend down, but from posts on this forum, it seems that it is in one way far harder to rent to friends and family than to strangers. Whilst not tarring all such rentals with the same brush, we see reports on here of liberties being taken e.g. late rent from the T, and guilt from the LL at the thought of evicting a (soon-to-be-former) friend.

I completely agree with PastureNew's post above.

Was that necessary? You are being snobby and judgmental, I am a single mother who did not work when my son was little. I now own 2 houses and am in the process of buying a 3rd.

I do understand that you are unhappy with where you live but you are making sweeping steriotypical judgments about people that are irrelevant to your problem, which is you don't have the money to move since you are in debt.

Do you live there? No you don't, so stop being so judgemental. And also stop showing off that you are fortunate enough to own 2 houses. I guess the taxpayers are paying the rent via your tenants? So still on the books indirectly then :p

OP, if you are depressed at the thought of coming home to that street each day, it's time to move on. Problems inside your four walls you can fix, but things like location, neighbours, what you see when you look out the window, the weather are all outside your control. We live in a "nice area" with stuck up neighbours. I wouldn't live in an area like this again for quids. But don't beat yourself up too much about choosing that house in that area. How could you have known what you would be comfortable with until you have tried it? Now you have. It's not for you. If you can afford to move, then imho it's time to take control and move on. If you can't (a position I am in at the moment), then I suggest working out a timeline, i.e. how long it is going to take to get to the point when you can afford to leave and commit to that date.

The other option is renting our house out ( got a friend who is keen to rent it and will pay a good price for it) and again renting a house somewhere else until we are in a position to sell and get a mortgage. Her rent would all but over the rent we would pay to live else where.

You need to sit down and think this through. Renting to friends is a rapid way to lose them as friends, especially if you have to start chasing them for late or missed payments. Any rent you get must be declared to HMRC. You must comply with all the rules and regulations, especially deposit protection and gas certification, you will still be responsible for repairs in your property.

It's just not as simple as you would like it to be.

I'm not trying to put you off the idea, just open your eyes to the pitfalls. Do a proper costing on the expenses and possible voids etc. you will find the profit side is not as great as you would like, the real profit from property ownership comes at the end when you finally sell the property.
