Tipping removal firms

I am moving next week and am wondering about the correct etiquette when using a removal firm. I am going to be on a very tight budget so do not want to spend money unnecessarily, but also do not want to not give money if it is the normal thing and removal men depend on a tip as part of their wage. If you do tip then how much for say an average service?

Why should you give someone a tip for doing what you have paid them to do?
Do you get a tip for doing yours?
If they did a bad job, would you expect them to reach into their wallets and give you £50?
We only tip in restaurants and only then if the server is exceptional. They get paid by their employer.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
I agree with Withabix, they get a wage and these days with a minimum wage in place I think tipping should be outlawed.0

I do agree with most of what you say but in the case of restaurants the staff DO depend on tips to make up their salary to a reasonable level, and the employer takes that into account. I would only not tip if the service was poor and that was the fault of the serving staff.
Also if you don't tip, do you return? I wonder what the nutritional value is of various bodily fluids?Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
I wouldn't tip them but in my experience mugs of tea and bacon rolls and they will be friends for life.I'm retiring at 55. You can but dream.0

Laughable. To be fair to removal firms their staff work their !!!!!!!! off - not a job I would want to do - and I tip accordingly.0 -
I second Cash cow.
Look after them with tea and coffee. If bacon baps are inconvenient, then some nice choccy biscuits and cookies.
Tradesmen really appreciate these offers, and it's a simple act of kindness that goes a long way.

I tipped my removal guys as they did a great job and worked their backsides off..... I think I gave them £50 between the 2 of them and it made their day.....
It's all well and good saying they get paid at least minimum wage but when someone works really hard doing a gut wrenching job and does it well then why not give them a nice bonus?
Considering how much money is involved in home buying, a few pounds to the real workers, as opposed to the thousands we pay in interest and fees to the banks and estate agents is a drop in the ocean.

You evidently don't live on minimum wage. If minimum wage was a sufficient wage to live on, then the Government wouldn't jave to pay working tax credits and family tax credits to low income families.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
I tip a lot of people. I've worked a lot of cr*p jobs and it makes your day when you have worked really hard and somebody tips you for a job well done even if it is a small tip.
I noticed it was always the people that have little money that give you tips too. The people in the massive houses in well off areas never tipped.0
