Fixing a cracked water butt

Any suggestions on how to fix my butt?

I have a small crack - right at the bottom!

{Doubtful anyone can treat the post seriously so far}

But actually my water butt does have a leak, I think it has perished - annoyingly as I run two in parallel with a syphon between them it keeps emptying the other one too (obviously I don't have to run the two in parallel)

Due to what I can only assume as the sun the butt has perished slightly and there is a crack almost at the base (but not quite so still on the curved surface). The crack is about 8cm long and at its widest point about 1mm wide.

I've unsuccessfully tried gaffer tape on the outside of the butt (note I can't gain access inside the butt - the main hole is only about the size of a two pence piece - although I'd rather cut the top off than bin the butt).

Currently thinking about silcon sealant and then more gaffer tape.

While I do have sense of humour - sorry to burst the first trolls bubble - I don't see Ann Summers solution as solving the problem!

    if you say the damage has been caused by the sun ..or age ..then i think the rest of it has gone brittle ..that's what happens to plastic as it ages .

    you could try a soldering iron on it ..fuse the crack together with heat ..it would have to be very clean before you try this .

    don't breath in the fumes though

    all other methods fiberglass repair etc ..will be too expensive

    especially when Wilkinsons are selling them for £14

    there is also a stronger tape ..available from builders merchants ..for taping together DPM... damp proof membrane

    Waste of time attempting to fix it from the outside - the water pressure will always see off any fix. Now from the inside, I would try Fernox LSX http://www.fernox.com/products/traditional+plumbing+products/jointing+compounds/ls-x. But bear in mins AE's comments about the plastic going brittle

    :rotfl::rotfl:.

    Errm seriously though - use the water, ditch the offending and get a new one. Current weather will fill it up quick enough anyhow,

    Cheers

    Have you got a crack in your butt?

    Oh dear ;)
  • We had the same thing happen to ours a few months back. Didn't even try to fix it, just splashed out on a replacement. I offered the defunct one on Freegle and got quite a few requests for it, mostly to cut it in half and use it as planters.
