What should I wear for a night out?

I've not been out for ages so I want something funky to wear for a night out. I am the other side of 40 but don't want to dress all mumsy. I am a size 12 but a bit top heavy so something with tiny straps or a halterneck is not really for me. I'll probably be dancing all night too.
What should I wear? I haven't got a clue. It really has been that long since I went out!! Can anyone give me some pointers please.

What kind of event is it? Are you going to treat yourself to a new outfit, or wear something you already have?
If its a casual evening out, I'd wear a nice smart pair of jeans (e.g. skinny or slim fit in dark blue or black), a funkly belt (Primark do some nice ones) some wedge heels (as they are so comfortable) and a nice top.
If its a posher evening, how about a nice shift dress - which you could dress up with some nice accessories (like a chain and some bracelets). THe good thing about shift dresses is that you can wear them slighly more casual or more dressy.
Hope you have a nice time.0 -
It's nothing posh, an adults only weekend with lots of cheesy dancing with friends as well as some clubby dancing too, but I'd like to dress up a bit as I never get a chance to these days. I am going to get something new but also something I can take on holiday when I go next.
I am just not sure what people are wearing these days and I did not want to dress as mutton and just have everyone laughing at me.
Thank you.I am certainly looking forward to it.

I can't get away with anything that has a round neck to be fair (is this what a shift dress has??) and I cannot seem to wear anything designer as I cannot get my boobs into them.
I've been looking at Bravissimo things on eBay. It is just finding the right thing to have a boogie in without falling out of.0 -

Shift dresses generally have high necks (think Jackie O), which is fine if you have no lumps or bumps although they are smart they make the rest of us look like sacks of potatoes. A slightly lower neck will reveal your sternum - generally one of the boniest areas you can expose - and make you look slimmer, whilst enhancing your lady-curves.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I think you mean collarbone, isn't the sturnum just below the boobs. If you start revealing that you really will look 'mutton' :eek:Cross Stitch Challenge member 11 - May challenge well under way

Sorry, my mistake. I was thinking that the sternum was the bit you squeezed during the heimlich maneuver.
Think I'll shut up now and book myself a biology lesson

Palazzo pants and a nice top. Comfortable and stylish.0

I'd go for good jeans, heels and a glitzy top. Dress up with hair accessories and bangles, earings.
Go to the high street and check out Wallis, BHS (yes, BHS have some gorgeous clothes at the moment, sophie Gray in particular) and Debanhams for ideas. Is it soon or edging into Autumn/Winter?0
