renewal gripe

I received my renewal from Dial Direct today for a staggering £635.54, last years premium was around £400 as new business. I think it would be worth noting that my wifes insurance through tesco's also came in at renewal at a cost of £667 for her vehicle. With my wifes insurance I went onto Tesco's website and got a new quote for her vehicle with exactly the same details as her renewal quote and the policy cost came out at £472, with this information I rang Tesco's renewal department and asked why as new business the policy would be £195 cheaper, they couldn't give me a direct answer but offered the renewal at £427!!."I accepted."

However, with Dial Direct, I got a quote through Compare the Market and their New Business price through Dial Direct came out at £468.54 some £167 cheaper, I then rang the renewals department of Dial Direct and they informed that if I were to not renew my renewal with them and then take out a new policy with the quote from compare the market they would not honour it and would charge me the renewal cost of £635.54, the person I spoke to on the telephone kept ranting on about guidelines under FSI or FIS, means nothing to me, but I think the whole renewal/new business thing stinks. Can anyone give me some advice

Shop around and move. It's rare that you can't beat the customer loyalty penalty price.
If you go through a cashback site you'll get an even better deal.
(If it's not clear when you take out the insurance with Dial Direct through a comparison site that they with increase the premium regardless of what the quote is, report them to the FSA as well)
